Now let's see how the NL teams did!
NL East
Chicago Cubs:
Round 1 pick: P Fergie Jenkins
Round 1 pick: LF Curt Blefary
Round 2 pick: LF Masahiro Doi
Round 3 pick: Pick Forfeited
Round 4 pick: P Al Raffo
Round 5 pick: P Jerry Crider
Round 6 pick: P Dave Gray
Round 7 pick: LF Roy Gleason
Matt used his first FPR on Ferguson "Fergie" Jenkins.
Matt began his draft by jumping up to reserve Fergie Jenkins with the 1st overall pick. Jenkins is a stud and could be come a future Cubs ace. Matt also traded for the Red Sox' 1st round pick and got Curt Blefary with it. Blefary will be nice with a hits talent increase, but the fair doubles isn't really a plus.
In the 2nd round, Matt selected Masahiro Doi. Doi looks like he will be a backup somewhere unless he gets PD help. He forfeited his 3rd round pick when making the FPR.
4th round pick Al Raffo could be a decent reliever. 5th round pick Jerry Crider will need PD help to get anywhere. 6th round pick Dave Gray should get cut and 7th round pick Roy Gleason already did get cut.
Matt made a smart FPR and had a solid draft overall.
Cubs 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Cubs 1962 Draft Grade: A-
New York Mets:
Round 1 pick: RF Rusty Staub
Round 2 pick: 3B Joe Foy
Round 3 pick: 3B Paul Schaal
Round 4 pick: P Pat House
Round 5 pick: P Darrell Osteen
Round 6 pick: P Cecil Perkins
Rusty Staub should turn into a big presence in the Mets' lineup.
I sorta made a homer pick with Rusty Staub 6th overall. He's a solid hitter and I already increased his hits to good. Can't wait for him to be a part of my lineup in the future.
My 2nd round pick Joe Foy already got a great PD to his homers, walks and strikeouts and I plan on increasing his hits soon as well.
In the 3rd round, I went with Paul Schaal, who could be a backup later unless he gets some PD's.
4th round pick Pat House and 5th round pick Darrell Osteen could both become bullpen depth in the future. I already cut 6th round pick Cecil Perkins because he sucks.
I like my draft overall and the Foy PD was great.
Mets 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Mets 1962 Draft Grade: A-
Philadelphia Phillies:
Round 1 pick: LF Roy White
Round 2 pick: LF Brant Alyea
Round 3 pick: P Hal Kurtz
Round 4 pick: P Bob Garibaldi
Round 5 pick: SS Jose Arcia
Round 6 pick: C Arlo Brunsberg
DRowe started his draft by taking Roy White 11th overall. White could use a doubles or homers increase, but he's a solid spect for a mid-1st round pick. The strong winning desire isn't a plus though.
In the 2nd round, Dan got Brant Alyea, who could be good with a hits talent increase.
3rd round pick Hal Kurtz could turn into a decent reliever.
4th round pick Bob Garibaldi is bullpen depth at best. 5th round pick Jose Arica and 6th round pick Arlo Brunsberg should both get cut soon.
Dan's draft was good and he got a couple bats that his minor league system needed to replenish his aging team.
Phillies 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Phillies 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Pittsburgh Pirates:
Round 1 pick: CF Paul Blair
Round 4 pick: P Conrad Cardinal
Round 5 pick: P Pete Charton
Round 6 pick: C Luis Isaac
In his first draft, Stoool selected Paul Blair and later traded him to the Cubs. Blair has mostly average talents, but his B/B running/stealing is a plus. The trade was very good for the Pirates because it landed them slugger Leon Wagner.
I traded the Pirates' 2nd and 3rd round picks last offseason for in-game cash. In a way, it was worth it.
4th round pick Conrad Cardinal suffered a home runs PD, but could be bullpen depth with PD help. 5th round pick Pete Charton is about to get cut and 6th round pick Luis Isaac already got cut.
All of the Pirates' first 3 picks ended up getting traded, but again, those moves certainly helped the Pirates get better.
Pirates 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B-
Pirates 1962 Draft Grade: C
St. Louis Cardinals:
Round 1 pick: P Bill Singer
Round 2 pick: RF Ed Kirkpatrick
Round 3 pick: P Bill Faul
Round 4 pick: P Hal Haydel
Round 5 pick: SS Mark Belanger
Round 6 pick: 2B Jim Driscoll
Round 7 pick: P Chuck Nieson
Matt selected Bill Singer 4th overall to add to what has become deeper minor league pitching depth for the Cardinals. Singer is a solid spect and has at least #2-3 potential in a rotation.
In the 2nd round, Matt took Ed Kirkpatrick, who could be a decent catcher with a hits talent increase. Look for him to be Moe Thacker's heir behind the plate.
3rd round pick Bill Faul is solid for a 3rd round pick, although he will need some duration work going forward. Faul could be ready by 1964.
4th round pick Hal Haydel got a strikeouts increase and could be an adequate reliever. 5th round pick Mark Belanger should get cut, while 6th round pick Jim Driscoll and 7th round pick Chuck Nieson both already have been shown the door.
Matt's draft was very good as he continues his retool.
Cardinals 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Cardinals 1962 Draft Grade: A-
NL West
Cincinnati Reds:
Round 1 pick: CF Jim Wynn
Round 3 pick: 1B Francis Agcaoili
Round 3 pick: C Paul Ratliff
Round 4 pick: P Ken Turner
Round 5 pick: P Jim Cosman
Round 6 pick: C Jim Campanis
Round 7 pick: P Tom Fletcher
Jim Wynn was easily one of the best hitters in this class and could be a very solid leadoff hitter in the future.
Jeff took Jim Wynn 3rd overall and he has probably found his leadoff hitter for the future. Increase Wynn's running speed to B and he could certainly become the next Jim Gilliam of HOFFBL.
Jeff traded his 2nd round pick to the Yankees.
Jeff had 2 3rd round picks. With one of them, he picked up Francis Agcaoili, who could be decent bench depth for the Reds. With the other pick, Jeff got Paul Ratliff, who will need PD help to get out of the minor leagues.
4th round pick Ken Turner will also need PD help to get anywhere and got a bad walks PD already. 5th round pick Jim Cosman is subpar, but the poor walks hurts his value significantly. 6th round pick Jim Campanis already got good PD's to his hits, walks and strikeouts, but is still a backup catcher at best. 7th round pick Tom Fletcher should get cut in the future.
Jeff had a very good draft, which he needed for his rebuild.
Reds 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Reds 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Houston Colt .45's:
Round 1 pick: P Jim Merritt
Round 2 pick: C Carl Taylor
Round 3 pick: RF Ollie Brown
Round 4 pick: 3B Bobby Pfeil
Round 5 pick: SS Hector Torres
Round 6 pick: LF John A. Miller
In the Colt .45's first draft as an actual team, Jenn picked Jim Merritt 5th overall. Merritt is a very solid pitcher who could be a big part of Jenn's future rotation.
In the 2nd round, Jenn picked Carl Taylor. Taylor could be a decent backup catcher with a hits talent increase.
3rd round pick Ollie Brown recently got bad PD's to his hits and strikeouts. We'll see if Jenn reverses them, but that probably won't happen. Brown is now a backup outfielder at best.
4th round pick Bobby Pfeil is a minor league backup infielder pretty much. 5th round pick Hector Torres and 6th round pick John Miller probably should get released in the near future.
Jenn's draft was good. She got a very good pitcher and catching depth in particular.
Colt .45's 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Colt .45's 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Los Angeles Dodgers:
Round 1 pick: LF Lou Piniella
Round 2 pick: 1B Ed Kranepool
Round 3 pick: P Jackie Brown
Round 4 pick: P Mike Joyce
Round 5 pick: 2B Ernie Fazio
Round 6 pick: P Pat Rogan
Jeremy selected Lou Piniella 19th overall and already reversed a hits and strikeouts PD that happened recently. Piniella's strong winning desire is somewhat offset by being loyal, but with all the success the Dodgers have had, this shouldn't be a big issue for Jeremy.
2nd round pick Ed Kranepool also has a strong winning desire for some reason, but regardless, should be a decent backup first baseman and corner outfielder.
3rd round pick Jackie Brown could turn into a useful pitcher with some PD's.
4th round pick Mike Joyce benefited from an amazing hits, home runs, walks and double strikeouts PD to become a stud, but the E duration makes him more likely to be a future closer. Joyce is even close to being major league ready at this point. What a steal!
5th round pick Ernie Fazio should get cut and 6th round pick Pat Rogan already got dropped.
Jeremy had a very good draft overall. That Dodgers team will never run out of talent.
Dodgers 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Dodgers 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Milwaukee Braves:
Round 1 pick: 2B Davey Johnson
Round 2 pick: 2B Mike Andrews
Round 3 pick: P Casey Cox
Round 4 pick: 3B Elijah Johnson
Round 5 pick: 3B Mike Ferraro
Round 6 pick: LF Leroy Reams
Darryl's draft began with taking Davey Johnson 17th overall. Johnson will need PD help to do anything in particular, but he has some potential.
2nd round pick Mike Andrews is similar to Johnson and will need PD help himself.
3rd round pick Casey Cox could be a good pitcher with a hits talent increase and duration increases.
4th round pick Elijah Johnson and 6th round pick Leroy Reams both have already gotten released. 5th round pick Mike Ferraro will toil in the minors for some time.
Darryl's draft was decent, but not particularly great.
Braves 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B
Braves 1962 Draft Grade: B-
San Francisco Giants:
Round 1 pick: P Grover Powell
Round 2 pick: P Fred Klages
Round 3 pick: P Dave DeBusschere
Round 4 pick: P Joe Verbanic
Round 5 pick: CF Billy Murphy
Round 6 pick: 1B Don Pepper
Spencer took Grover Powell 15th overall to start his draft and already increased his walks to average. Powell has closing potential for sure and should turn into a great reliever.
2nd round pick Fred Klages benefited from good PD's to his home runs, walks and strikeouts and just got traded to the Mets. He has very good potential going forward.
3rd round pick Dave DeBusschere looks ready for the majors right now, but the fair walks will probably prevent him from being a starter.
4th round pick Joe Verbanic got a nice hits and strikeouts PD and could have starting potential if all goes well. 5th round pick Billy Murphy and 6th round pick Don Pepper both should get cut to say the least.
Spencer's draft was above average and he definitely benefited from a few PD's.
