Philadelphia (AP) -- Suiting up for his first taste of the big leagues after arriving on an early morning flight from Pittsburgh, 23-year-old Curt Roberts confided something to a handful of reporters scribbling notes while trying not to look at his ballsack: "I ate a sandwich this morning from this shop owned by the Primanti Brothers [see image], been around 20-aught years [since 1933], and I think it might stick around a while. Let me tells ya, it was good. But then, when I flew in to Philly, I had a chance to try a cheesesteak from John's Roast Pork, which opened in 1930, and man oh man have the 3 extra years they've been in business given them an edge. They make a fantastic sandwich (see 2nd image]. I think it is the sesame seeds on the buns, the Schuykill punch used to make the buns, stop looking at my buns, or just the fact that I'm eating it in Philadelphia and not in Shittsburgh. I think good things are in store for me here. I'm ready to play me some baseball."
Preparing to leave the locker room for the dugout, Roberts added: "I know this team has come to be known as the 'Whiz Kids,' but frankly, I prefer American." "Cheese," cawed a photographer, and Roberts smiled while the bulb smashed, drawing a rambunctious "MAZAL TOV" from new 2b and double-play maestro Billy Goodman. "Let's turn two, young man" said the veteran to the newb: "not before I take a number two," replied Roberts, as he retreated back through the locker room to the toilets to send the last piece of Pittsburgh left in him into the toilet with several loud plunks. Goodman smiled: "I hope this kid hits as good as he shits."
And hit he did. In his first week in Philadelphia and the big leagues, Curt Roberts went 11/28 (.393) with 1 2b, 1 3b, 3 HR, 12 RBIs, and 6 runs. His 1.214 OPS may not sustain itself, but the hope is that his defense will: he has been mistake-free in 34 opportunities through 7 games, and during which he has teamed with 2b Goodman to turn 6 double plays in 58 innings (1/9.667 innings). The previous SS had only turned 42 in 572 innings (1/13.62). Small sample size? We're hoping Roberts can help flush that logic down the toilet. With the poop he makes from the cheesesteaks he eats, because he loves cheesesteaks. This may or may not be his thing. Stay tuned.
