The Brooklyn Dodgers, the NY Giants and the Milwaukee Braves. Why mention two former franchises located in the north in the same sentence as the perennial contender Braves? Focus on the first two and then on the word north now put them together and you'll see why fans in Brew City are getting nervous.
Rumours have leaked to the press recently that team owner Darryl Lierman has been in talks with the Atlanta city council about potentially relocating the Braves to Atlanta. Spurred on the the success of the moves of the Dodgers to LA and the Giants to San Francisco owner Lierman sees an opportunity to ensure the long term financial viability of his franchise by heading south. When asked recently about whether he was exploring a move Lierman had this to say "I wont lie to our fans we are in talks with Atlanta about a potential move as early as next season. Sure I'd hate to take pro baseball away from the great people of Milwaukee but if you had a chance to read our ledgers you'd understand my reasoning. Look at this years attendance for an example. We are averaging 12 less fans per game then the previous season. Where did those 12 people go? I sure don't know but I'm the one losing money over it. " Asked to give a closing comment rating the chances of the team moving to Atlanta Lierman remarked " I don't think the people of Milwaukee should be worried I have spoken to Milwaukee Mayor Bill McCheese and I believe we have some common ground that can ensure the Braves stay put. If I were a betting man I'd say there is a much chance of us leaving as there is of a man walking on the moon.
Only time will tell whether there really is a threat of our city losing the Braves but already fans are taking no chances. A crowd of about 1000 strong has been outside the Braves offices protesting the idea with signs ranging from "sell the team you carpetbagger" to "Be Brave and stay." to "Don't Yank our Hank.". One fan asked had these comments "If the Braves leave Milwaukee all we will have left for entertainment is beer and while that is a pretty darn good alternative I'd prefer we keep both."
