Cubs trade SP Bob Shaw, RP Joe Stanka and RP Bob Anderson to the Orioles in exchange for SP Larry Jackson, RP Don Bessent, CL Mel Held, RP Moe Drabowsky, SS Jose Pagan and RP Arnie Protocarrero.
Old fashioned blockbuster. We eat a whole bunch of salary in order to acquire a SS that we really like in Pagan without giving up any of our youth. I do think this deal probably makes us a little better in the short term as well, one more year of Jackson will let us ease some of the kids in to the rotation.
I'm a big Shaw fan despite his struggles this year. He's been a very good innings eater and a solid #2 SP for us, but he wanted to play for a winning team so we give him that opportunity. I had no intentions of re-signing Stanka. Anderson has been very solid for us in middle relief but we have a lot of arms that are close to ready.
Buster Olney would probably report that this deal is probably not the only one the Cubs are in on and it will probably allow them to make ANOTHER deal that they've been working on for a few days. Stay tuned for details.
Thanks to the O's for working through this one with me. It wasn't easy, but I think it benefits both squads long term.

Confirmed. Had to take my medicine for some bad contracts, and Pagan is the price I pay for that. The deal clears up about $38 million in salary over this season and next, which allows the Orioles to stay solvent. The guys I sent were not getting a lot of interest on the market (mostly due to their financial liability), but do offer some value in the short term. Pagan has been a nice late-bloomer and I hate having to move him, but at the end of the day, he was no more than a versatile bench player who can be replaced. The three pitchers will all get a look at I wait for Palmer/Bunker/Carroll to move up to the majors, and if one of them can make a meaningful contribution for the next few years, I'm happy with it. Thanks to the Cubs for the quick and easy deal! G/L

Please put Jackson in as my #1 SP, and make Held my closer. I left both of those spots open. I'll let you know if there is further instructions, otherwise, for the time being, stick everyone else in AAA. I may have further instructions with Pagan depending on what happens with a seperate deal.

Place Shaw in the empty spot in the rotation. Stanka in the empty setup spot, and as #1 mop-up. Anderson as #3 middle reliever. Thx
