Minimum Contract
Players who have not yet been called up to the Active Roster and are in the minor leagues do not draw salary; they are on a Minor League Contract (MLC). Players who are drafted in the Amateur Draft are automatically signed to an MLC.
Players who are called up to the Active Roster are assigned a major league contract, at $300k. At the end of the season, said player will have been considered to have spent a full season of service. Be careful not to call up a player in late September for no real reason because this would risk "losing" an entire year of service for only a few at bats.
Arbitration
After the three (3) automatic years at $300k, players are up for another three (3) years of arbitration before they become free agents. During these automatic and arbitration years, there are three options:
1) Do Nothing. OOTP5's arbiter will automatically assign him a salary for the current season;
2) Release him at the end of the season for no cost (effectively refusing to offer a player salary arbitration);
3) Sign him to a multi-year extension.
Extensions
Extensions can be offered to any player who is arbitration eligible or in the last year of their contract beginning June 1st. Offers are made through the Extensions board. The Commissioner is responsible for replying with the exact response from the player(s). Teams may make offers to any number of players, provided that no more than five (5) total offers have been made, per sim.
Extension Limitations
- One year deals worth $20M or more can only be offered to players 34 years of age or older.
- Players must be offered an extension based on the position they have played the most in their walk year. This also applies to whether they are relief or starting pitchers.
- Designated Hitters must be offered an extension based on the position they have played the most throughout their careers or, if they have always DH'd, the position in which they have the best defensive rating (as determined by the Commissioner).
- Contracts cannot exceed 7 years
- If a player makes more than $300k (more than the minimum), said player cannot be offered an extension while in the minor leagues.
