doesn't this system kind of penalize guys who were consistently amazing, rather than brilliant for a few years and otherwise mediocre? cough cough steroids.
Looks like they will have the following Player Value Fees:
1b/3b/LF Dick Allen (signed 1960): 2 * (8.8 + 7.5 + 6.4 + 5.3 + 3.8) = 63.6 = 64 (note: he posted a WAR of 8.6 one year with CHW, and a 5.4 with the LAD... should I have included these instead? if so, that takes him up to 73.4 = 73) SP Steve Carlton (signed by STL 1963): 2 * (12.1 + 10.2 + 6.8^ + 5.9 + 5.5) = (^ = with STL, otherwise would be 5.5 w/ Philly) 3b Mike Schmidt (drafted&signed 1971): 2 * (9.7 + 8.9 + 8.8 + 7.9 + 7.9) = 86.4= 86 C Darren Daulton (drafted/signed 1980): 2 * (6.8 + 4.9 + 4 + 2.5 + 2) = 40.4 = 40 CF Lenny Dykstra (drafted&signed 1981): 2 * (8.9 + 6.5 + 4.7^ + 3.8^ + 3.5^) = 54.8 = 55 (^ = seasons with mets, vs. only 3.1, 2.4, and 2.3 in his 3 next highest w/ the phillies) SP Curt Schilling (drafted&signed by boston 1986): 2 * (6.3 + 6.2 + 8.8^ + 8.7^ + 7.9^) = 75.8 = 78 (^ time with Zona and Boston, sadly) RF Bobby Abreu (signed by HOU in 1990): 2 * (6.4 + 6.1 + 6.2 + 6.6 + 5.8) = 62.2 = 62 3b Scott Rolen (signed/drafted 1993): 2 * (9.1! + 5.8! + 6.6 + 5.5 + 4.7) = 63.4 = 63 SS Jimmy Rollins (drafted/signed 1996): 2 * (6.1 + 5.4 + 4.9 + 4.7 + 4.6) = 51.4 = 51 LF/1b Pat Burrell (signed/drafted 1998): 2 * (4.5 + 3.6 + 2.3 + 2 + 1.5) = 27.8 = 28 1b Ryan Howard (drafted&signed 2001): 2 * (3.1 + 5.2 + 2.9 + 3.8 + 1.7) = 33.4 = 33 2b/1b Chase Utley (drafted&signed 2000): 2 * (9.0 + 8.2 + 7.8 + 7.3 + 7.2) = 79*** SP Cole Hamels (drafted&signed 2002): 2 * (6.6 + 5.4 + 4.6 + 4.6 + 4.3) = 51
let's start with that. any insight into ratings? thanks!

The potential ratings are generally based on career numbers and sometimes boosted if very very good for a few seasons. I think it all evens out in the end. Anyway, you need to the top 5 seasons, regardless of who they played for.
Dick Allen (1960): Value: 2 * (8.8 + 8.6 + 7.5 + 6.4 + 5.4) = 73.4 = 73 Ratings: G/A/G/B/G/F with C speed and C steals
Steve Carlton (1963): Value: 2 * (12.1 + 10.2 + 6.8 + 5.9 + 5.5) = 81.0 = 81 Ratings: G/G/B/G/B with A endurance
Mike Schmidt (1971): Value: 2 * (9.7 + 8.9 + 8.8 + 7.9 + 7.9) = 86.4 = 86 Ratings: A/A/A/B/B/F with B speed, C steals
Darren Daulton (1980): Value: 2 * (6.8 + 4.9 + 4.0 + 2.5 + 2.0) = 40.4 = 40 Ratings: A/A/F/A/G/A with D speed, B steals
Lenny Dykstra (1981): Value: 2 * (8.9 + 6.5 + 4.7 + 3.8 + 3.5) = 54.8 = 55 Ratings: G/G/A/F/G/G with B speed, B steals
Curt Schilling (1986): Value: 2 * (8.8 + 8.7 + 7.9 + 6.3 + 6.2) = 75.8 = 76 Ratings: G/A/G/B/B with A endurance
Bobby Abreu (1990): Value: 2 * (6.6 + 6.4 + 6.2 + 6.1 + 5.8) = 62.2 = 62 Ratings: G/G/A/A/B/A with B speed, B steals, F (I mean E) range in OF
Scott Rolen (1993): Value: 2 * (9.1 + 6.6 + 5.8 + 5.5 + 4.7) = 63.4 = 63 Ratings: G/G/A/G/G/A with C speed, B steals, A range
Jimmy Rollins (1996): Value: 2 * (6.1 + 5.4 + 4.9 + 4.7 + 4.6) = 51.4 = 51 (Still Active) Ratings: A/G/B/A/A/G with B speed, A steals, C range but high FPCT
Pat Burrell (1998): Value: 2 * (4.5 + 3.6 + 2.3 + 2.0 + 1.5) = 27.8 = 28 Ratings: A/A/F/G/G/F with E speed, D steals, E range
Chase Utley (2000): Value: 2 * (9.0 + 8.2 + 7.8 + 7.3 + 7.2) = 79.0 = 79 (Still Active) Ratings: G/G/A/G/A/A with C speed, A steals, B range
Ryan Howard (2001): Value: 2 * (5.2 + 3.8 + 3.1 + 2.9 + 1.7) = 33.4 = 33 (Still Active) Ratings: A/A/F/B/G/P with D speed, D steals, C range
Cole Hamels (2002): Value: 2 * (6.6 + 5.4 + 4.6 + 4.6 + 4.3) = 51.0 = 51 (Still Active) Ratings: G/A/G/G/G with C endurance (he's really close to getting B in HR/BB/Endurance, but needs another couple good seasons I think)

LF/DH Greg "the Bull" Luzinski (1st rd pick of phillies, 1968): 2 * (5.2 + 4.2 + 3.2 + 2.6 + 2.5) = 35.4 = 35 .... maybe G / G / G / G / A?

SP Larry Christenson (1972): 2 * (3.2 + 1.7 + 1.7+ 1.1 + 0.5) = 16.4 = 16 .... he wasn't too bad, might deserve solid ratings

Would like to reserve Schmidt, especially since there's probably a while after that before anyone is worth reserving.
How long before the 1971 draft should I do this? I'm assuming that I lose my 1st round pick?

Nothing you need to do for now until 1971.
By reserving Schmidt, you move to the top of the draft with the first round pick and use that pick to select Schmidt. The cost of reserving is measured by how many teams you "jump" ahead of to make that reservation. If you move up a couple picks, it's probably just a 3rd round pick ... more than that you might forfeit a 2nd instead.

I know there's no Philly GM right now but Schmidt looks like a clear cut FPR candidate for the next draft. Can't see him being any worse to start than A/B/B.

Agreed; if I do not have a gm within the next 2 weeks, then I'll reserve them on their behalf.

I will reserve Mike Schmidt on behalf of the GMless Phillies.
Cost will be 10 + 86 + 4 = 100 points
Phillies will forfeit 2nd round pick.

Scott Rolen
10 + ((9.2 + 6.7 + 5.9 + 5.6 + 4.7 = 32.1 * 2 = 64.2 = 64) + (18th pick - 1st overall rank = 17)
10 + 64 + 17 = 91 pts
You have 105 pts, so you can afford him. You would forfeit your earliest 2nd and 3rd round picks if you chose to reserve Rolen.

Scott Rolen (1993): Value: 2 * (9.1 + 6.6 + 5.8 + 5.5 + 4.7) = 63.4 = 63 Ratings: G/G/A/G/G/A with C speed, B steals, A range Looks familiar
