The Los Angeles Dodgers, mere days after signing starting pitcher Frank Baumann to a 2 year, $20 million extension, have released the southpaw. The Dodgers will be responsible for 100% of the extension amount, since both sides had signed the extension paperwork before the release.
While Baumann and his agent have been quiet about the release, Dodgers' President/CEO/Manager/Scout/And Overall Nice Guy Jeremy Hill had a few comments on the release. When pressed for details Mr. Hill noted that subsequent to the signing of the extension paperwork, the team was made aware of some health issues that they believed would impact Baumann's effectiveness in the upcoming seasons. When asked why not keep Baumann on the roster and at least see how he is able to pitcher next season, Mr. Hill commented that the team was in much better financial position to eat the $20 million dollars in extension monies this season, when they could offset about a year of the extension against income that otherwise would have been earmarked for future stadium work. A portion of that income was earned when the Dodgers made their seventh World Series appearance this past season. By releasing Baumann now, Mr. Hill stated, it opens up other roster options for next season that wouldn't have otherwise existed.
