The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Luis Aparicio, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. In 23 at bats he hit .609 with 0 HR and 4 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Bill D. White, San Francisco's starting leftfielder. White helped his team with an average of .500 and 3 RBI in 22 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 11 game hitting streak right now.
Saturday 4/23/1969: Fred Newman (WS2) will miss 4 weeks
WASHINGTON - When it rains, it pours. Washington's right-hander Fred Newman will not pitch for at least 4 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Minnesota where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Washington wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Newman had suffered a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .187 against Fred this season. While posting an ERA of 2.08 he went 1-0 in 4 starts, fanning 5 and walking 13 hitters.

CALIFORNIA - California's lefty Rudy May made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Boston. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today. That's a dream coming true for me!' May (2-2) did not have perfect control, walking 6. He struck out 6. The hitting star for California was second baseman Alex Johnson, he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB. The final score of the game was 4-0.

WASHINGTON - Minnesota's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Washington's Dave Gerard didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Gerard (2-1) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 80 of 127 pitches for strikes. Ed Bouchee provided Washington with the offense Gerard needed as he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, stroking a double. Washington improved its record to 9-10, scoring 1 run on 3 hits.
Wednesday 4/20/1969: Vinegar Bend Mizell dominates Washington, gives up just one hit
SEATTLE - Vinegar Bend Mizell had his best stuff going, and Washington hitters had nothing to cheer about. Seattle's southpaw pitched a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Mizell (2-0) struck out 6 and issued 5 BB, throwing 73 of 126 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Seattle was leftfielder Tom Clarkson, he went 3 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring twice with 3 RBI. Seattle scored 9 runs on 11 hits.
Wednesday 4/20/1969: Mudcat Grant fires 1-hitter against Boston
BOSTON - Mudcat Grant had some fun again. Boston hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 46 career shutouts in 405 games started. Grant (4-0) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 5, throwing 127 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Don Robertson finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Grant. Chicago (A) scored 6 runs on 14 hits.
