Monday 5/16/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Bearnarth and Gibson
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Larry Bearnarth this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Larry has a record of 7-1 this season, with an ERA of 2.32. In 73.2 Innings he was able to strike out 42 batters. Larry has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. He's 7th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! The National League's best player of the week was St. Louis' Bob Gibson, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. Gibson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 16 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts!
Sunday 5/15/1969: It's NO-NO time for Jim Perry against San Diego
ATLANTA - Jim Perry had some fun again. REAL fun. San Diego hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 268 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Perry (7-2) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 60 of 96 pitches for strikes. Atlanta's centerfielder Steve Brye finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, doubling three times. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Perry. Atlanta scored 3 runs on 9 hits.
Friday 5/13/1969: Jerry Koosman pitches his 1st shutout of the season
HOUSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Houston's southpaw Jerry Koosman. Philadelphia found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. Koosman (6-2) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 1, throwing 80 of 117 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' The hitting star for Houston was leftfielder Hal McRae, he got 2 hits in 3 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Wednesday 5/11/1969: Philadelphia's Bosman out for 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Dick Bosman suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Bosman had suffered a Pulled Tricep Muscle. This season Bosman compiled an ERA of 4.25, going 1-4 in 7 starts. He fanned 22 while giving up 51 hits in 53 innings.
