WASHINGTON - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Tom Kelley did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Washington. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Kelley (3-6) struck out 7 and issued 4 BB, throwing 65 of 117 pitches for strikes. Angel Bravo provided Boston with the offense Kelley needed as he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB. Boston improved its record to 16-28, scoring 2 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 5/23/1969: Andy Messersmith shuts out California on 2 hits
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Andy Messersmith is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking California on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. Messersmith (6-4) struck out 2 and issued 4 BB, throwing 56 of 112 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' The hitting star for Minnesota was leftfielder Joe Pepitone, he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, with 4 RBI. Minnesota improved its record to 28-16, scoring 5 runs on 3 hits.
Monday 5/23/1969: Jaster and Torre win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Larry Jaster, one of New York (A)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.80 while going 2-0. Joe Torre wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 21 at bats he hit .619 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. Joe has gone 58 for 153 (.379) this season, hitting 4 homeruns and driving in 22 runs. He has scored 28 runs on his own. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Thursday 5/19/1969: Joe Albanese (NYM) will miss 8 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - When it rains, it pours. New York (N)'s ace Joe Albanese will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 4th inning. Herniated Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 9 starts this year Joe struck out 36 batters in 72 innings of work. His ERA is 1.63, his record 3-3. Joe has pitched 2 shutouts and 6 complete games.
Wednesday 5/18/1969: Catfish Hunter blanks San Diego with a 1-hitter
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's Catfish Hunter overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. San Diego had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. Hunter (3-5) struck out 8 and issued 3 BB, throwing 69 of 118 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Tex Nelson provided Pittsburgh with the offense Hunter needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, scoring two runs and driving in 2 runs. Pittsburgh scored 7 runs on 13 hits.
