Wednesday 6/1/1969: Grant (CHA) and Gibson (STL) win monthly pitcher award
Chicago (A)'s Mudcat Grant had a terrific May, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 5-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 52 innings of work he allowed just 31 hits while striking out 46, compiling an ERA of just 1.21. Mudcat pitched a shutout as well. This season Grant compiled an ERA of 1.52, going 10-1 in 11 starts. He fanned 74 while giving up 52 hits in 95 innings. He has 8 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Bob Gibson couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 4-1 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.82. He struck out 42 in 44 innings. Bob got two complete game shutouts as well! Bob has a record of 10-1 this season, with an ERA of 1.02. The American League's best player of the month was Minnesota's Tom Haller, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Tom pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .408 with 9 and 21 RBI while slugging .842. While compiling an on base percentage of .461, Tom hit .350 and slugged .719. He has collected 49 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was New York (N)'s Joe Torre, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Joe went 38 for 92 (.413), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 19 RBI. This year Torre drove in 28 and scored 33 runs while batting .372 with 5 taters. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Monday 5/30/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Oliva and Dilauro
The American League's best player of the week was Cleveland's Tony Oliva, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Tony pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .444 with 2 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .963. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Jack Dilauro. Dilauro was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 5 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/29/1969: Jack Dilauro shuts out San Diego on one hit
SAN DIEGO - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Jack Dilauro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. Dilauro (8-2) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 72 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman Jack Kubiszyn went 2 for 3, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Dilauro. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Sunday 5/29/1969: Joey Jay fires 2-hitter against Boston
BOSTON - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Joey Jay is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Boston on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 17th time he has done it in his career. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Jay (4-5) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 75 of 120 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was second baseman Felix Millan, he finished 3 for 4. Chicago (A) improved its record to 29-21, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
Friday 5/27/1969: Jack Fisher fires 2-hitter against Atlanta
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Jack Fisher is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Atlanta on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. Fisher (5-2) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 122 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Jim Fregosi helped Fisher at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. Cincinnati scored 1 run on 5 hits.
Friday 5/27/1969: Jack Jenkins quiets Boston bats with shutout
BOSTON - Jack Jenkins had his best stuff going, and Boston hitters were chanceless. Detroit's right-hander fired a 2-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. Mack Jones spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with two outs in the 6th inning. Jenkins (5-3) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 54 of 92 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Al Kaline provided Detroit with the offense Jenkins needed as he finished with 1 hit in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, with 3 RBI. Detroit scored 5 runs on 13 hits.
Thursday 5/26/1969: St. Louis' Johnson out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' right-hander Ken T. Johnson will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Diego where he left the field in the 11th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. In 0 starts this year Ken T. struck out 3 batters in 3 innings of work. His ERA is 0.00, his record 1-0.
