Monday 6/20/1969: Bill Monbouquette pitches 2-hit shutout against St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - Atlanta's right-hander Bill Monbouquette is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. St. Louis found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Monbouquette 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 22nd shutouts in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Alex George singled with one out in the 7th inning. Monbouquette (4-4) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 99 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Atlanta's centerfielder Steve Brye went 1 for 3, homering once, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Monbouquette. Atlanta improved its record to 40-30, scoring 2 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 6/20/1969: Harimoto and Scheinblum win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Isao Harimoto, Baltimore's starting rightfielder. Isao went 13 for 24 (.542), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 7 RBI. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Pittsburgh's centerfielder Richie Scheinblum. He hit .500 with 6 RBI and slugged .727 in 22 at bats. He has hit 4 homeruns while batting .276 this season. His 64 hits and 13 walks add up to a .310 on-base percentage.
Thursday 6/16/1969: Don Sutton blanks Montreal with a 2-hitter
MONTREAL - San Francisco's right-hander Don Sutton is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. Sutton (7-9) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 126 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Willie Horton helped Sutton at the plate, he went 2 for 2, homering twice, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 3-0.
