Friday 7/1/1969: Kelley (BOS) and Joyce (LAN) win monthly pitcher award
Boston's Tom Kelley had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 5-1 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 1.24. He struck out 29 in 50.2 innings. In 16 starts this year Tom struck out 79 batters in 123.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.43, his record 8-8. Tom has pitched one shutout and 5 complete games. Los Angeles (N)'s Mike Joyce had a terrific June, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He went 4-0 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 1.07. He struck out 30 in 58.2 innings. Mike fired two shutouts! His ERA of 1.57 helped him to a 10-3 record this year. He struck out 79 and walked 49 in 137.1 innings. He has 6 complete games and 4 shutouts.

Baltimore's rightfielder Isao Harimoto had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Harimoto helped his team with an average of .382 and 20 RBI in 102 at bats. His season features a batting average of .277 (82 hits in 296 AB), 7 doubles, 3 triples and 11 bombs. Harimoto collected 35 RBI and 45 runs as well. It's the 11th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Roberto Clemente. Roberto was on fire, hitting .290 with 8 homeruns and 26 RBI. Roberto has gone 86 for 295 (.292) this season, hitting 26 taters and driving in 68 runs. He has scored 51 runs on his own. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Tuesday 6/28/1969: Tex Clevenger pitches 2-hit shutout against Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - Great days are rare. But not for New York (N)'s right-hander Tex Clevenger. Philadelphia found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 24th time he has done it in his career. Clevenger (7-6) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Gene Oliver provided New York (N) with the offense Clevenger needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. New York (N) scored 4 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 6/27/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Taylor and Rojas
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Ron Taylor this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 2.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 18 starts this year Ron struck out 44 batters in 137.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.40, his record 11-4. Ron has pitched 2 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in wins! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Cookie Rojas, Los Angeles (N)'s starting second baseman. Cookie went 13 for 20 (.650), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 5 RBI. Cookie is hitting .254 this year, with 72 hits in 283 at bats. He has driven in 35 runs, slugging .406.

SAN DIEGO - Mike Joyce took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 76 games started. Joyce (10-3) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 63 of 98 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' The hitting star for Los Angeles (N) was second baseman Cookie Rojas, he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB.
