Monday 7/4/1969: Kaat (NYA) and Duffalo (SFG) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jim Kaat, one of New York (A)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.51 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 19 starts this year Jim struck out 48 batters in 152.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.42, his record 8-9. Jim has pitched 2 shutouts and 7 complete games. San Francisco's pitcher Jim Duffalo had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 7/2/1969: Gordie Richardson dominates California, gives up just 2 hits
OAKLAND - California's bats were sleeping, and Oakland's Gordie Richardson gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. Richardson (7-3) fanned 9 and walked 2, throwing 123 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Tommy Davis provided Oakland with the offense Richardson needed as he went 1 for 5, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. Oakland improved its record to 38-43, scoring 6 runs on 8 hits.
