Friday 7/29/1969: Jim Perry blanks Philadelphia with a 1-hitter
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Jim Perry is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Philadelphia on just one hit. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Perry (14-8) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 60 of 96 pitches for strikes. Lee Thomas provided Atlanta with the offense Perry needed as he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate. Atlanta improved its record to 60-41, scoring 1 run on 7 hits.
Thursday 7/28/1969: Garland Shifflett quiets California bats with shutout
DETROIT - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Garland Shifflett. California found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Shifflett (12-6) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 97 pitches. Detroit's catcher Tim McCarver stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, homering twice, scoring three runs with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Shifflett. Detroit scored 13 runs on 14 hits.
Thursday 7/28/1969: Chicago (A) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Cecil Upshaw
CHICAGO (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Cecil Upshaw is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Chicago (A) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Upshaw 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 5th shutouts in his career. Upshaw (14-6) fanned none and walked 2, throwing 92 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Norm Siebern helped Upshaw at the plate, he went 2 for 5, scoring 2 runs. New York (A) improved its record to 58-42, scoring 7 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 7/25/1969: Siebern (NYA) and Segui (LAN) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Norm Siebern, New York (A)'s starting first baseman. Norm went 13 for 28 (.464), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 8 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .364, Norm hit .293 and slugged .490. He has collected 53 runs batted in this year. The National League's best player of the week was Los Angeles (N)'s Diego Segui, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.60 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 12 starts this year Diego struck out 64 batters in 90.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.88, his record 6-4. Diego has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
Saturday 7/23/1969: Mickey Lolich shuts out Boston on 2 hits
BOSTON - Mickey Lolich had some fun again. Boston hitters did not. California's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 159 games started. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Lolich (12-6) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 1, throwing 72 of 103 pitches for strikes. Bobby Bonds provided California with the offense Lolich needed as he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
