ATLANTA - Roberto Clemente is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Jim Perry in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in center field. In the 9th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Tug McGraw. He had singles in the 1st , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . Roberto scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He is hitting .303 this season, with 33 HR and 86 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-1.
Wednesday 8/3/1969: Mickey Lolich quiets Baltimore bats with shutout
CALIFORNIA - California's lefty Mickey Lolich is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Baltimore found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Lolich 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 5th shutouts in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Lolich (15-6) fanned 6 and walked 3, throwing 100 pitches. California's first baseman Mike Epstein collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Lolich. California improved its record to 58-48, scoring 5 runs on 8 hits.
Tuesday 8/2/1969: Jim Woods out for 5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's third baseman Jim Woods will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 2nd inning of the game between Detroit and Washington. He fielded a ball off the bat of Vern Fuller, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. Woods was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Bicep Muscle. While compiling an on base percentage of .369, Jim hit .250 and slugged .388. He has collected 45 runs batted in this year.
Monday 8/1/1969: Huge blow for Seattle's Dailey, career over
SEATTLE - It was one of baseball saddest days. Seattle's right-hander Bill Dailey fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Chicago (A) on Monday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Grant Jackson, then suddenly collapsed. Seattle wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Dailey had suffered a Torn Bicep Muscle. Bill has a record of 8-7 this season, with an ERA of 3.84. In 166.1 Innings he was able to strike out 138 batters. He has 4 complete games and one shutout. His career featured a record of 52-63 with an ERA of 4.63. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Minnesota's Milt Pappas this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Pappas was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.03. Along the way he struck out 6 in 13.1 innings. His ERA of 2.63 helped him to a 12-2 record this year. He struck out 132 and walked 56 in 181.1 innings. Milt has pitched 2 shutouts and 2 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 7th in wins! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to New York (N)'s Gene Brabender this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Monday collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Monday had suffered a Torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Monday has hit for a .273 average this season. He has 32 extra base hits along with 157 total bases, resulting in a .409 slugging percentage.
Sunday 7/31/1969: Hank Aaron slams 600th homerun
CHICAGO (N) - Atlanta's Hank Aaron showed a smile on his face after he belted his 600th career homerun against Chicago (N) on Sunday. Along with his 600 homeruns, Hank collected 3248 hits and 1986 RBI in 16 seasons. Hank hit 30+ homeruns in a season 12 times, hitting 40 bombs 6 times. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' His monumental drive, a two-run homerun off Fergie Jenkins in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in left field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
