The American League's best player of the week was New York (A)'s Norm Siebern, who wins the award for the 19th time in his career. Norm was on fire, hitting .545 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Clete Boyer, San Francisco's starting shortstop. Clete went 9 for 20 (.450), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 10 RBI.
Friday 8/12/1969: Oakland has no chance in a 1-hitter by Garland Shifflett
OAKLAND - Detroit's right-hander Garland Shifflett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 28th time he has done it in his career. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Shifflett (14-6) struck out 3 and walked none, throwing 52 of 84 pitches for strikes. Detroit's rightfielder Al Kaline finished 3 for 5, hitting a double, scoring twice. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Shifflett. Detroit scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 8/10/1969: Joe Albanese dominates San Diego, gives up just one hit
SAN DIEGO - Joe Albanese took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 42 career shutouts in 337 games started. Albanese (6-4) struck out none and issued 3 BB, throwing 66 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' New York (N)'s catcher Duffy Dyer stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Albanese. The final score of the game was 4-0.

KANSAS CITY - Cleveland's left-hander Don Rowe is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 32nd time he has done it in his career. Rowe (15-7) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 60 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Don Buddin helped Rowe at the plate, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once. Cleveland scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
Tuesday 8/9/1969: Jim McGlothlin (CAL) will miss 7-8 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California is without its right-hander Jim McGlothlin for at least 7-8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Art Shamsky in a game against Chicago (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 1 starts this year Jim struck out 19 batters in 35.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.02, his record 1-2.

BALTIMORE - Baltimore's centerfielder Frank Howard will miss at least 4 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Howard was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Hip Muscle. While compiling an on base percentage of .398, Frank hit .302 and slugged .522. He has collected 61 runs batted in this year. He's 9th in the American League in batting!

DETROIT - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Eddie Watt is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Detroit found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Watt 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Watt (12-5) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 110 pitches. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was first baseman Katsuo Osugi, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB. Chicago (A) improved its record to 64-47, scoring 3 runs on 9 hits.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Frank Howard this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Frank went 10 for 26 (.385), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 11 RBI. Frank is hitting .300 this year, with 109 hits in 363 at bats. He has driven in 60 runs, slugging .518. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Bob Gibson this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Gibson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 18 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts!
