Thursday 9/1/1969: Rowe and Gibson receive Pitcher of the Month award
Don Rowe couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the American League thought so as well, naming the left-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 0.52 helped him to a 6-1 record in August. He worked 69 innings, striking out 60 hitters while walking 11. Opposing players hit .194 against Don this season. While posting an ERA of 2.20 he went 18-8 in 32 starts, fanning 199 and walking 41 hitters. He has 14 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! It's the 8th time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Bob Gibson. He went 7-0 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.03. He struck out 58 in 61 innings. Bob fired THREE shutouts! This season Gibson compiled an ERA of 1.45, going 25-6 in 32 starts. He fanned 256 while giving up 182 hits in 274 innings. He has 21 complete games and 7 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Thursday 9/1/1969: Gile (MIN) and Clemente (LAN) win monthly award
The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Don Gile, Minnesota's starting first baseman. Gile helped his team with an average of .359 and 29 RBI in 92 at bats. His season features a batting average of .295 (135 hits in 457 AB), 20 doubles, no triples and 27 longballs. Gile collected 98 RBI and 72 runs as well. He's 10th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Roberto Clemente, Los Angeles (N)'s starting rightfielder. He hit .386 with 23 RBI and slugged .711 in 114 at bats. Clemente has hit 39 longballs this year while batting .313. He adds 38 doubles, along with 93 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Wednesday 8/31/1969: Jerry Koosman shuts out Philadelphia on one hit
HOUSTON - Houston's lefty Jerry Koosman is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Philadelphia found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Koosman 5th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 11th shutouts in his career. Koosman (18-11) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 3, throwing 107 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Houston's second baseman Joe L. Morgan finished 1 for 3. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Koosman. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Wednesday 8/31/1969: Sandy Koufax pitches his 7th shutout of the season
MONTREAL - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Sandy Koufax is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just 2 hits. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 48th time he has done it in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Koufax (17-9) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 118 pitches. Chuck Schilling helped Koufax at the plate, he went 1 for 4, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Wednesday 8/31/1969: Hal Stowe pitches 2-hit shutout against Washington
WASHINGTON - Hal Stowe had some fun again. Washington hitters did not. Baltimore's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 221 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Stowe (14-8) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 68 of 107 pitches for strikes. Baltimore's rightfielder Isao Harimoto got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Stowe. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Tuesday 8/30/1969: Ken McBride pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
HOUSTON - Ken McBride had some fun again. Philadelphia hitters did not. Houston's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 215 games started. McBride (9-16) struck out 7 and walked 5, throwing 75 of 129 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' The hitting star for Houston was catcher Doc Edwards, he finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Tuesday 8/30/1969: Chico Salmon ropes four hits, completes cycle
CLEVELAND - Chico Salmon hits 'em where they ain't. Cleveland certainly agrees as Boston's second baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. His 1st hit, off Bill Hands in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A double off Bill Hands in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 5th inning he unloaded a triple off Bill Hands. A single in the 7th off Al McBean accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Chico scored 2 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! He is hitting .265 this season, with 9 HR and 53 RBI. 27 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Chico. Tony Conigliaro was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 6/11/1969.
Monday 8/29/1969: Cleveland's Dick Howser pounds five hits
CLEVELAND - Dick Howser hits 'em where they ain't. Boston certainly agrees as Cleveland's shortstop unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 4 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 408 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Dick Tidrow in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd inning and in the 4th inning (one RBI). Dick scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .291 this season, with 17 HR and 58 RBI. Cleveland scored 10 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 8/29/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Alyea and Drysdale
Brant Alyea wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Brant was on fire, hitting .400 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. Brant managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Alyea has hit for a .245 average this season. He has 36 extra base hits along with 181 total bases, resulting in a .388 slugging percentage. It's the 8th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Don Drysdale. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.52, while fanning 21 in 17.1 innings of work. NEW YORK (N) - Gene Brabender had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 11 career shutouts in 178 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Brabender (15-12) struck out 8 and walked 3, throwing 70 of 119 pitches for strikes. Don Lock provided New York (N) with the offense Brabender needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Wednesday 8/24/1969: Minnesota's Tom Haller has great day, hits three longballs
BOSTON - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Minnesota's catcher Tom Haller accomplished that feat in a 14-7 win over Boston. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 422 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A 405 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Chuck Dobson in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Dick Tidrow in the 5th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 379 feet from home plate in left-center. Overall he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs with 6 RBI. The final score of the game was 14-7.
Tuesday 8/23/1969: Don Rowe quiets Detroit bats with shutout
DETROIT - Don Rowe had some fun again. Detroit hitters did not. Cleveland's lefty gave up just one hit in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 34 career shutouts in 439 games started. Rowe (17-7) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 69 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Rocky Colavito helped Rowe at the plate, he finished 1 for 4, and collecting 2 RBI. Cleveland improved its record to 81-43, scoring 3 runs on 5 hits.
Tuesday 8/23/1969: Baltimore's Freehan out for 7 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, catcher Bill Freehan, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament which will require surgery. Freehan has hit for a .255 average this season. He has 20 extra base hits along with 135 total bases, resulting in a .363 slugging percentage.
Monday 8/22/1969: Jack Fisher (CIN) will miss 7 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Jack Fisher suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Houston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Spasms Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .218 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 2.73 he went 12-9 in 25 starts, fanning 175 and walking 83 hitters. He has 10 complete games and 3 shutouts.
Monday 8/22/1969: Los Angeles (N)'s Orsino wins Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's pitcher Rich Beck. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! Opposing players hit .191 against Rich this season. While posting an ERA of 2.26 he went 13-4 in 26 starts, fanning 150 and walking 63 hitters. He has 8 complete games and 7 shutouts. Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman John Orsino had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Orsino helped his team with an average of .600 and 5 RBI in 20 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. PITTSBURGH - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Jack Dilauro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. CINCINNATI - Atlanta's right-hander Stan Bahnsen will never forget this day. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Cincinnati on Tuesday. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Bahnsen (5-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. Tuesday 8/30/1969: Ken McBride pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
HOUSTON - Ken McBride had some fun again. Philadelphia hitters did not. Houston's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 215 games started. McBride (9-16) struck out 7 and walked 5, throwing 75 of 129 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' The hitting star for Houston was catcher Doc Edwards, he finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Tuesday 8/30/1969: Chico Salmon ropes four hits, completes cycle
CLEVELAND - Chico Salmon hits 'em where they ain't. Cleveland certainly agrees as Boston's second baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. His 1st hit, off Bill Hands in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A double off Bill Hands in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 5th inning he unloaded a triple off Bill Hands. A single in the 7th off Al McBean accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Chico scored 2 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! He is hitting .265 this season, with 9 HR and 53 RBI. 27 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Chico. Tony Conigliaro was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 6/11/1969.
Monday 8/29/1969: Cleveland's Dick Howser pounds five hits
CLEVELAND - Dick Howser hits 'em where they ain't. Boston certainly agrees as Cleveland's shortstop unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 4 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 408 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Dick Tidrow in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd inning and in the 4th inning (one RBI). Dick scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .291 this season, with 17 HR and 58 RBI. Cleveland scored 10 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 8/29/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Alyea and Drysdale
Brant Alyea wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Brant was on fire, hitting .400 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. Brant managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Alyea has hit for a .245 average this season. He has 36 extra base hits along with 181 total bases, resulting in a .388 slugging percentage. It's the 8th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Don Drysdale. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.52, while fanning 21 in 17.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 31 starts this year Don struck out 276 batters in 251 innings of work. His ERA is 1.79, his record 16-8. Don has pitched 3 shutouts and 13 complete games. NEW YORK (N) - Gene Brabender had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 11 career shutouts in 178 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Brabender (15-12) struck out 8 and walked 3, throwing 70 of 119 pitches for strikes. Don Lock provided New York (N) with the offense Brabender needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate. Wednesday 8/24/1969: Minnesota's Tom Haller has great day, hits three longballs
BOSTON - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Minnesota's catcher Tom Haller accomplished that feat in a 14-7 win over Boston. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 422 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A 405 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Chuck Dobson in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Dick Tidrow in the 5th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 379 feet from home plate in left-center. Overall he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs with 6 RBI. The final score of the game was 14-7.
Tuesday 8/23/1969: Don Rowe quiets Detroit bats with shutout
DETROIT - Don Rowe had some fun again. Detroit hitters did not. Cleveland's lefty gave up just one hit in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 34 career shutouts in 439 games started. Rowe (17-7) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 69 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Rocky Colavito helped Rowe at the plate, he finished 1 for 4, and collecting 2 RBI. Cleveland improved its record to 81-43, scoring 3 runs on 5 hits.
Tuesday 8/23/1969: Baltimore's Freehan out for 7 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, catcher Bill Freehan, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament which will require surgery. Freehan has hit for a .255 average this season. He has 20 extra base hits along with 135 total bases, resulting in a .363 slugging percentage.
Monday 8/22/1969: Jack Fisher (CIN) will miss 7 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Jack Fisher suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Houston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Spasms Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .218 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 2.73 he went 12-9 in 25 starts, fanning 175 and walking 83 hitters. He has 10 complete games and 3 shutouts.
Monday 8/22/1969: Los Angeles (N)'s Orsino wins Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's pitcher Rich Beck. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! Opposing players hit .191 against Rich this season. While posting an ERA of 2.26 he went 13-4 in 26 starts, fanning 150 and walking 63 hitters. He has 8 complete games and 7 shutouts. Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman John Orsino had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Orsino helped his team with an average of .600 and 5 RBI in 20 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' DETROIT - Don Gile powered Minnesota to a 15-13 win over Detroit. He did it in style by homering three times.
