OAKLAND - Great days are rare. But not for California's right-hander Mudcat Grant. Oakland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 52nd time he has done it in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Grant (22-7) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 68 of 110 pitches for strikes. California's second baseman Horace Clarke finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring twice with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Grant. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Thursday 9/15/1969: Lew Krausse Jr. shuts out Detroit on 2 hits
WASHINGTON - Lew Krausse Jr. took the mound and never left. And Detroit hitters couldn't touch him at all. Washington's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 144 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Krausse Jr. (7-10) struck out 4 and walked 3, throwing 68 of 112 pitches for strikes. Washington's first baseman Randy Hundley stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, doubling once, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Krausse Jr.. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Monday 9/12/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Nomura and Perry
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to California's catcher Katsuya Nomura. Nomura helped his team with an average of .520 and 9 RBI in 25 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Gaylord Perry this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Perry was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59. Along the way he struck out 15 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Friday 9/9/1969: Steve Blass blanks Pittsburgh with a 2-hitter
CHICAGO (N) - Pittsburgh's offense is struggling, and Chicago (N)'s Steve Blass didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 2nd shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Blass (11-9) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 54 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Bob Burda helped Blass at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (N) improved its record to 59-81, scoring 5 runs on 13 hits.
Friday 9/9/1969: Detroit's Norm Cash gets milestone hit
DETROIT - Detroit's first baseman Norm Cash already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Norm collected 390 homeruns and 1372 RBI in 13 seasons. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 4th inning was a two run homerun off Tom Hall.

CHICAGO (A) - Don LeJohn got a standing ovation from 42570 fans in Chicago (A), who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1960 where he hit .340 with 8 homeruns and 66 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' He hit a double in the 4th off Grant Jackson for number 2000.
