OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's right-hander Joe Niekro will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 1st inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. In 18 starts this year Joe struck out 41 batters in 102 innings of work. His ERA is 7.68, his record 3-10.
Wednesday 9/21/1969: Nolan Ryan turns in great performance against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - California's right-hander Nolan Ryan didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Cleveland, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Ryan (16-13) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 90 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' The hitting star for California was shortstop Alex Johnson, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Monday 9/19/1969: Gary Nolan quiets Montreal bats with shutout
MONTREAL - Cincinnati's right-hander Gary Nolan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Nolan (17-11) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 63 of 98 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Cincinnati was second baseman Johnny Callison, he finished 4 for 4, hitting a double, scoring three runs and driving in 3 runs. Cincinnati improved its record to 95-54, scoring 9 runs on 17 hits.

The American League's best player of the week was Oakland's Fritz Peterson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Fritz went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 6 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League's best player of the week was San Francisco's Bill Melton, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Bill was on fire, hitting .292 with 4 HR and 13 RBI.

ATLANTA - On Sunday, St. Louis' leftfielder Lee Maye displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Atlanta, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A pitch from Stan Bahnsen in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 407 feet from home plate in left field. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Stan Bahnsen in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left-center. Number 3 in the 5th inning accounted for a double. A two-run double off Dave Dowling in the 9th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He collected a single in the 9th. Lee did drive in 5 while scoring 5 runs on his own. He now has a total of 141 hits this season, accounting for a .276 batting average. St. Louis improved its record to 95-54, scoring 30 runs on 30 hits.
Saturday 9/17/1969: Jackie Warner punishes Oakland with three dingers
DETROIT - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Detroit's centerfielder Jackie Warner accomplished that feat in a 9-2 win over Oakland. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Joe Niekro in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 352 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Joe Niekro in the 5th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Grover Powell in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 345 feet from home plate in left field. Overall he finished 3 for 4, scoring three runs and driving in 5 runs. So far this season he is batting .303 with 25 homers and 94 RBI. Detroit scored 9 runs on 15 hits.
Saturday 9/17/1969: Huge blow for Baltimore's Stowe, career over
BALTIMORE - It was one of baseball saddest days. Baltimore's southpaw Hal Stowe fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Cleveland on Saturday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Dick Howser, then suddenly collapsed. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.25 helped him to a 14-8 record this year. He struck out 141 and walked 71 in 246.2 innings. Hal has pitched one shutout and 10 complete games. His career featured a record of 92-89 with an ERA of 3.90. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
