BALTIMORE - Jim Palmer took the mound and never left. And Chicago (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Baltimore's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 135 games started. Palmer (4-2) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 132 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Baltimore's second baseman Charley Smith stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring three times with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Palmer. Baltimore improved its record to 12-16, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.

Detroit's pitcher Joe H. Coleman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.52 while going 2-0. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 64th time he has done it in his career. Floyd Robinson spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Drysdale (5-1) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 114 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. California's pitcher Mickey Lolich is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He went 4-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 1.45. He struck out 29 in 43.1 innings. Mickey fired two shutouts! Los Angeles (N)'s Sandy Koufax had a terrific April, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. Orlando Cepeda of New York (N) wins his 3rd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .430 and hit .389, while driving in 23 runs.

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's right-hander Don Sutton is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!'
