Wednesday 6/1/1970: Cincinnati's Billingham named Pitcher of the Month
Boston's pitcher Joey Jay is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in May. His record of 3-2 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 43 innings of work he allowed just 23 hits while striking out 31, compiling an ERA of just 1.26. Joey fired two shutouts! In 10 starts this year Joey struck out 54 batters in 82 innings of work. His ERA is 2.52, his record 6-3. He has 6 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 8th in the American League in wins! Cincinnati's Jack Billingham had a terrific May, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 27 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 27 innings. His ERA in May was 0.76. Jack pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.95 helped him to a 6-2 record this year. He struck out 62 and walked 18 in 74 innings. He has one complete game and one shutout.
Wednesday 6/1/1970: Detroit's Rose Sr. earns Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Pete Rose Sr., who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Pete went 37 for 87 (.425), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 19 RBI. Pete has gone 71 for 179 (.397) this season, hitting 12 homeruns and driving in 39 runs. He has scored 47 runs on his own. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 4th in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Don Demeter, Los Angeles (N)'s starting leftfielder. Don went 38 for 100 (.380), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 19 RBI. Demeter has walked 3 times this year and posts a .401 OBP. While batting .374, 61 for 163, he has driven in 31 runs. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Monday 5/30/1970: Ed Charles stars with cycle against Chicago (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Ed Charles hits 'em where they ain't. Chicago (A) certainly agrees as New York (A)'s shortstop unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A triple off Mike Fornieles in the 1st inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 2nd off Mike Fornieles accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Mike Fornieles in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 351 feet from home plate in left field. A double off Mike Lee in the 8th inning accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Ed scored 2 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 63 hits in 204 at bats, resulting in a .309 batting average. He's now the 28th player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 8/30/1969, Chico Salmon was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Monday 5/30/1970: Philadelphia's Sims wins Player of the Week award
Steve Garvey wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Steve was on fire, hitting .481 with 1 HR and 8 RBI. He has hit 2 taters while batting .253 this season. His 42 hits and 6 walks add up to a .284 on-base percentage. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia's catcher Duke Sims. Duke pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 6 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.071.
Saturday 5/28/1970: San Francisco's Frank Robinson belts 500th career homerun
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's Frank Robinson showed a smile on his face after he belted his 500th career homerun against Chicago (N) on Saturday. In 16 years of big league action so far, Frank has compiled a batting average of .313, along with 2852 hits and 1522 RBI. Frank has managed to hit 30+ homeruns in a season 10 times, and he topped 40 homeruns 2 times. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' He hit number 500 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 325 feet which cleared the wall in right field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Wednesday 5/25/1970: Kansas City's Peters out for 6 weeks
KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's ace Gary Peters will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Washington where he left the field in the 6th inning. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Gary has a record of 4-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.96. In 70 Innings he was able to strike out 20 batters. Gary has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
