Wednesday 6/22/1970: Lenny Green (BOS) will miss full season
BOSTON - Boston's rightfielder Lenny Green suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Foot. Green has hit for a .303 average this season. He has 5 extra base hits along with 28 total bases, resulting in a .368 slugging percentage.
Monday 6/20/1970: Aubrey Gatewood NO-HITS San Diego
ATLANTA - Aubrey Gatewood had some fun again. REAL fun. San Diego hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 71 games started. Gates Brown spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 5th inning. Gatewood (8-5) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 78 of 131 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Carl Boles, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. Atlanta improved its record to 43-27, scoring 5 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 6/20/1970: Danny Morris dominates Oakland, gives up just 2 hits
OAKLAND - With his best stuff going, Minnesota's Danny Morris overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Oakland had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Morris (6-3) fanned 2 and walked 4, throwing 119 pitches. Minnesota's second baseman Rod Carew stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Morris. Minnesota scored 9 runs on 16 hits.
Monday 6/20/1970: Chicago (A)'s Watt wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Eddie Watt. Eddie went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56, while fanning 6 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 9th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Don Drysdale. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 25 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! In 16 starts this year Don struck out 154 batters in 140.1 innings of work. His ERA is 0.77, his record 11-4. Don has pitched 7 shutouts and 14 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 4th in wins!
Thursday 6/16/1970: Chris Zachary shuts out Pittsburgh on 2 hits
SAN DIEGO - It was a great day for San Diego's right-hander Chris Zachary. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Pittsburgh on Thursday. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Zachary (4-5) fanned 7 and walked 4, throwing 128 pitches. Moe Thacker helped Zachary at the plate, he finished 1 for 3. The final score of the game was 3-0.
