Cleveland's second baseman Chico Heron had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 21 at bats he hit .429 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. Don Drysdale of St. Louis wins his 10th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Drysdale was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 17 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! His ERA of 0.65 helped him to a 14-4 record this year. He struck out 181 and walked 23 in 167.1 innings. He has 17 complete games and 10 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 4th in wins!
Saturday 7/2/1970: Mudcat Grant shuts out Milwaukee on one hit
CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Mudcat Grant is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Grant 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 54th shutouts in his career. Grant (8-6) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 69 of 109 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Jose Cardenal provided California with the offense Grant needed as he went 2 for 4, doubling twice. California improved its record to 50-31, scoring 1 run on 6 hits.
Saturday 7/2/1970: Don Blasingame ropes 2000th career hit
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's third baseman Don Blasingame joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Don collected 145 homeruns and 915 RBI in 17 seasons. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' With two outs in the 2nd inning, Don drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Friday 7/1/1970: Jaster (NYA) and Drysdale (STL) win monthly pitcher award
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Larry Jaster. He had an ERA of just 0.88 in 51 innings of work in which he struck out 35 hitters. His record in June is 5-1. Larry got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .219 against Larry this season. While posting an ERA of 2.14 he went 10-3 in 16 starts, fanning 94 and walking 19 hitters. Larry has pitched 2 shutouts and 6 complete games. The best month of June in the National League certainly had St. Louis' right-hander Don Drysdale, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Detroit's Pete Rose Sr. this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .483 and hit .412, while driving in 22 runs. Pete is hitting .402 this year, with 113 hits in 281 at bats. He has driven in 61 runs, slugging .687. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! It's the 2nd time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to New York (N)'s first baseman Gene Oliver. Thursday 6/30/1970: Pittsburgh's Hunter severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its right-hander Catfish Hunter for at least 6-7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Shigeo Nagashima in a game against St. Louis. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .247 against Catfish this season. While posting an ERA of 5.40 he went 5-9 in 18 starts, fanning 108 and walking 64 hitters.

SAN DIEGO - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Jack Dilauro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Dilauro (11-6) struck out 1 and walked none, throwing 59 of 90 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Don Demeter provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Dilauro needed as he went 2 for 4, stroking a double, and driving in 3 runs.
