Tim McCarver from Detroit wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. A 423 foot drive to left-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Bucky Brandon in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Clyde Wright. Gene finished 4 for 5, scoring three times and collecting 9 RBI. In 5919 career at bats, he has hit 325 homeruns and collected 995 RBI. On 7/12/1970, Roberto Clemente was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.

KANSAS CITY - Great days are rare. But not for Boston's right-hander Joey Jay. Kansas City found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 23rd time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Billy L. Williams singled with no outs in the 8th inning. Jay (10-6) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 110 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' J.C. PITTSBURGH - Gene Freese got a standing ovation from 22534 fans in Pittsburgh, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. With one out in the 4th inning, Gene drilled a triple, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1963 where he hit .288 with 37 homeruns and 108 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'

ATLANTA - Atlanta's Carl Boles suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Cincinnati. Boles fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. LOS ANGELES (N) - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Roberto Clemente accomplished that feat in a 14-1 win over New York (N). His 1st shot, off Tom Seaver in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. A pitch from Tom Seaver in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 435 feet from home plate in center field. His 3rd shot, a three-run homerun off Jack Cullen in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. Roberto finished 3 for 4, scoring three times and collecting 5 RBI. So far this season he is batting .289 with 17 homers and 58 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! The final score of the game was 14-1.
