Saturday 7/30/1970: Montreal's Cardwell severely injured
MONTREAL - Montreal's right-hander Don Cardwell suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Philadelphia he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. In 23 starts this year Don struck out 57 batters in 163.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.45, his record 5-14. Don has pitched one shutout and 9 complete games.
Saturday 7/30/1970: Kansas City has no chance in a 1-hitter by Andy Messersmith
MINNESOTA - Andy Messersmith had some fun again. Kansas City hitters did not. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 87 games started. Messersmith (9-8) struck out 8 and walked 3, throwing 63 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Minnesota's centerfielder Merv Rettenmund stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Messersmith. Minnesota improved its record to 55-47, scoring 4 runs on 6 hits.
Friday 7/29/1970: Larry Bearnarth pitches 2-hit shutout against Milwaukee
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Larry Bearnarth is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Bearnarth 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 11th shutouts in his career. Bearnarth (15-5) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 102 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Bearnarth. The final score of the game was 2-0.

KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its right-hander Steve Renko for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ed Charles in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Renko was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Elbow. In 20 starts this year Steve struck out 92 batters in 143 innings of work. His ERA is 3.65, his record 10-7. He has 4 complete games and one shutout.

It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Eddie Watt. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Watt compiled an ERA of 1.63, going 12-7 in 22 starts. He fanned 129 while giving up 119 hits in 177 innings. He has 10 complete games and 5 shutouts. Ken McBride of Houston wins his 5th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! This season McBride compiled an ERA of 3.14, going 9-10 in 22 starts. He fanned 130 while giving up 134 hits in 180.2 innings. He has 11 complete games and 2 shutouts.
