Friday 8/5/1970: Fred Klages dominates Montreal, gives up just 2 hits
MONTREAL - Fred Klages took the mound and never left. And Montreal hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 54 games started. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Klages (7-11) fanned 3 and walked 2, throwing 105 pitches. Nate Colbert provided Philadelphia with the offense Klages needed as he finished 1 for 4, blasting a homerun. Philadelphia scored 4 runs on 6 hits.
Wednesday 8/3/1970: Kansas City has no chance in a PERFECT GAME by Phil Regan
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Phil Regan is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Kansas City on no hits. The crowd of 37162 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. Regan (10-7) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Jim Barbieri helped Regan at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (A) improved its record to 49-57, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 8/1/1970: Dick Howser out for 5 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, shortstop Dick Howser, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. Howser was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Howser has walked 34 times this year and posts a .326 OBP. While batting .265, 106 for 400, he has driven in 29 runs.
Monday 8/1/1970: Chicago (A)'s Shamsky wins Player of the Week award
Art Shamsky wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .607 and hit .476, while driving in 9 runs. The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Orlando Cepeda, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .480, while driving in 6 runs.
Monday 8/1/1970: San Francisco's Sutton named Pitcher of the Month
Boston's pitcher Joey Jay is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. His ERA of just 1.64 helped him to a 5-0 record in July. He worked 44 innings, striking out 38 hitters while walking 0. Joey pitched a shutout as well. In 21 starts this year Joey struck out 130 batters in 171.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.47, his record 13-6. Joey has pitched 4 shutouts and 11 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Roberto Clemente this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league.
