Thursday 9/1/1970: Cleveland's Beck earns Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Cleveland's pitcher Rich Beck. He went 5-2 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.30. He struck out 40 in 62.1 innings. Rich fired two shutouts! This season Beck compiled an ERA of 2.11, going 19-10 in 33 starts. He fanned 189 while giving up 178 hits in 269.1 innings. Rich has pitched 7 shutouts and 15 complete games. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! The best month of August in the National League certainly had St. Louis' right-hander Don Drysdale, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 1.02 helped him to a 7-0 record in August. He worked 61.2 innings, striking out 72 hitters while walking 7. Don fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .187 against Don this season. While posting an ERA of 1.02 he went 25-6 in 32 starts, fanning 313 and walking 37 hitters. Don has pitched 12 shutouts and 27 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!

The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Pete Rose Sr., who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. Pete went 44 for 106 (.415), while hitting 11 HR and collecting 26 RBI. His season features a batting average of .387 (185 hits in 478 AB), 16 doubles, 2 triples and 37 bombs. Rose Sr. collected 97 RBI and 116 runs as well. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was San Francisco's Frank Robinson, who wins the award for the 8th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .417 and hit .311, while driving in 28 runs. Frank is hitting .308 this year, with 133 hits in 432 at bats. He has driven in 88 runs, slugging .539. He's 5th in the National League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!
Wednesday 8/31/1970: Cincinnati's Reggie Smith gets the cycle
CINCINNATI - Reggie Smith led Cincinnati to a 4-3 win over New York (N) by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! His 1st hit was a double off Dick Hughes in the 1st inning. A single in the 3rd off Dick Hughes accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Dick Hughes in the 7th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. A 446 foot drive to right field marked his 4th hit, a solo homerun off Tex Clevenger in the 10th inning. That one even won the game for his team! That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Reggie did drive in 2 while scoring one run on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .313. He becomes the 29th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Ed Charles was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/30/1970.
Wednesday 8/31/1970: New York (A)'s Ike Brown ropes five hits
KANSAS CITY - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said New York (A)'s second baseman Ike Brown after the 9-1 win over Kansas City. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Harry Parker in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in left field. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Harry Parker. He had singles in the 2nd inning , in the 7th inning (one RBI) and in the 9th . Ike scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 128 hits in 422 at bats, resulting in a .303 batting average.
Wednesday 8/31/1970: 5-hit performance by Detroit's Jerry Kindall
DETROIT - Jerry Kindall is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st hit, off Grant Jackson in the 1st inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Number 3 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 367 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. In the 8th inning he belted a double off Joe Gibbon. He had singles in the 2nd (one RBI) and in the 6th inning . Jerry scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .337. Detroit improved its record to 82-51, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits.
Monday 8/29/1970: Don Drysdale has done it, earns 300th win
PITTSBURGH - St. Louis' players had every reason to congratulate Don Drysdale, who reached a milestone today, winning his 300th game! He struck out 2 and walked one earned run. Over 8.2 innings he allowed one earned run and 6 hits. His career features a 2.40 ERA, along with 4379 K's in 4334 innings. He set a career high with 28 wins in 1967. Drysdale won 20 or more games a season 10 times. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it.
Monday 8/29/1970: Grant (CAL) and Boyer (SFG) win P.O.W. award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to California's pitcher Mudcat Grant. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .182 against Mudcat this season. While posting an ERA of 1.99 he went 13-9 in 27 starts, fanning 177 and walking 86 hitters. He has 17 complete games and 4 shutouts. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Clete Boyer this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 24 at bats he hit .458 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. His season features a batting average of .270 (117 hits in 434 AB), 18 doubles, 2 triples and 12 homeruns. Boyer collected 61 RBI and 60 runs as well.

MONTREAL - Age doesn't matter. At least Montreal's left-hander Herb Score shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against San Diego, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Score (7-18) struck out 7 and walked 6, throwing 67 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Carl Warwick provided Montreal with the offense Score needed as he finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once. The final score of the game was 2-0.

SAN DIEGO - Atlanta's right-hander Bill Monbouquette made some history today, firing a no-hitter against San Diego. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Monbouquette (9-4) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 9. The hitting star for Atlanta was first baseman Hank Aaron, he went 3 for 5. The final score of the game was 5-0.

NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Gene Brabender is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits.
