CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Mudcat Grant is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Milwaukee on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 57th time he has done it in his career. Grant (16-10) struck out 9 and issued 3 BB, throwing 73 of 120 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' California's leftfielder Jose Cardenal stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Grant. California scored 4 runs on 8 hits.
Thursday 9/15/1970: Minnesota's Harmon Killebrew laces 2000th career hit
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's third baseman Harmon Killebrew was in good mood after the game against Oakland, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 1st inning was a single off Denny McLain. In 14 years of big league action so far, Harmon has compiled a batting average of .282, along with 369 homeruns and 1204 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'

SAN FRANCISCO - Don Sutton had some fun again. Pittsburgh hitters did not. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 7th shutout of the season. He now has 11 career shutouts in 83 games started. Sutton (14-6) struck out 9 and walked 1, throwing 73 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Willie McCovey provided San Francisco with the offense Sutton needed as he got 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Monday 9/12/1970: Player of the Week honors go to Short and Hughes
The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Bill Short, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Short was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 17 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Dick Hughes. Hughes was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53. Along the way he struck out 8 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.

MONTREAL - Jim Brewer had some fun again. Montreal hitters did not. Los Angeles (N)'s lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 23 career shutouts in 231 games started. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Brewer (16-11) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 94 pitches for strikes. John Orsino provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Brewer needed as he got 4 hits in 6 AB, stroking a double, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 13-0.

CALIFORNIA - Mickey Lolich took the mound and never left. And Cleveland hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 7th shutout of the season. He now has 14 career shutouts in 206 games started. Lolich (22-5) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 66 of 113 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Tony Horton provided California with the offense Lolich needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting THREE doubles. California improved its record to 88-54, scoring 3 runs on 8 hits.
