Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Washington's Fred Newman. He went 4-2 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.92. He struck out 22 in 48.2 innings. Fred got two complete game shutouts as well! Fred has a record of 16-10 this season, with an ERA of 1.95. In 244.1 Innings he was able to strike out 79 batters. He has 5 complete games and 3 shutouts. Los Angeles (N)'s Luis Tiant had a terrific September, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 39 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 5-2 while pitching 39 innings. His ERA in September was 1.17. Luis fired two shutouts! The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Detroit's Norm Cash this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Norm pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .379 with 8 and 25 RBI while slugging .705. While compiling an on base percentage of .386, Norm hit .283 and slugged .478. He has collected 104 runs batted in this year. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 8th in homeruns! It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Adolfo Phillips. In 84 at bats he hit .345 with 5 HR and 25 RBI. He has hit 32 longballs while batting .269 this season. His 144 hits and 114 walks add up to a .404 on-base percentage. He's 5th in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!

WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Fred Newman is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Oakland found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Newman 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 8th shutouts in his career. Newman (16-10) fanned 1 and walked 2, throwing 89 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Washington's shortstop Bob Schroder got 2 hits in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Newman. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Tuesday 9/27/1970: Mudcat Grant blanks Washington with a 2-hitter
CALIFORNIA - Mudcat Grant had some fun again. Washington hitters did not. California's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 6th shutout of the season. He now has 58 career shutouts in 473 games started. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Bob Schroder singled with no outs in the 6th inning. Grant (18-11) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 65 of 108 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Monday 9/26/1970: Willie McCovey ropes 2000th career hit
SAN FRANCISCO - Willie McCovey got a standing ovation from 48707 fans in San Francisco, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Willie collected 397 homeruns and 1309 RBI in 13 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' He hit a single in the 1st off Dallas Green for number 2000.
Monday 9/26/1970: Cash and Clevenger win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Norm Cash, Detroit's starting first baseman. He hit .478 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.130 in 23 at bats. He now has homered in 5 consecutive games as well! New York (N)'s pitcher Tex Clevenger had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. His ERA of 3.48 helped him to a 8-5 record this year. He struck out 83 and walked 23 in 101 innings. He has 3 complete games and one shutout.
Saturday 9/24/1970: Orlando Cepeda collects 2000th hit against Houston
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s players had every reason to congratulate Orlando Cepeda, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1959 where he hit .303 with 27 homeruns and 95 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' He hit a single in the 5th off Jerry Koosman for number 2000.
Friday 9/23/1970: Gary Dotter out for 8 weeks
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' left-hander Gary Dotter will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 14th inning. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .135 against Gary this season. While posting an ERA of 1.62 he went 1-2 in 0 starts, fanning 25 and walking 7 hitters.

Sunday 9/18/1970: New York (A)'s Battey severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - Milwaukee's Dan Pfister drilled New York (A)'s catcher Earl Battey in the 6th inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Earl Battey will miss at least 4-5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Hand which will require surgery. Battey has hit 9 longballs this year while batting .275. He adds 17 doubles, along with 67 runs scored.
Friday 9/16/1970: Bill Monbouquette shuts out Chicago (N) on one hit
CHICAGO (N) - Atlanta's right-hander Bill Monbouquette is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Chicago (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Monbouquette 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 26th shutouts in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Monbouquette (11-6) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 4, throwing 81 of 133 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Jose Pagan, he went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Friday 9/16/1970: Jim Lonborg fires 2-hitter against Kansas City
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Jim Lonborg is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Don LeJohn singled with two outs in the 5th inning. Lonborg (11-10) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 109 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Mike Solomko helped Lonborg at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. Boston scored 2 runs on 5 hits.

Friday 9/16/1970: Jim Lonborg fires 2-hitter against Kansas City
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Jim Lonborg is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Don LeJohn singled with two outs in the 5th inning. Lonborg (11-10) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 109 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Mike Solomko helped Lonborg at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. Boston scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
