SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco is without its right-hander Jim Duffalo for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Leon Wagner in a game against Pittsburgh. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Monday 5/9/1971: Kansas City's Parker out for 4-5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's ace Harry Parker will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Oakland where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Parker was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Elbow Ligament. In 8 starts this year Harry struck out 19 batters in 49.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.71, his record 1-3.
Monday 5/9/1971: Player of the Week honors go to Haller and Koufax
The American League's best player of the week was Minnesota's Tom Haller, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 19 at bats he hit .526 with 1 HR and 3 RBI. Tuesday 5/3/1971: Ellie Rodriguez out for full season
WASHINGTON - Washington's catcher Ellie Rodriguez suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Rodriguez laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Wrist. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Rodriguez drove in 3 and scored 7 runs while batting .190 with no bombs.

HOUSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Sandy Koufax. Houston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 61st time he has done it in his career. Koufax (5-1) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 78 of 118 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' John Orsino helped Koufax at the plate, he went 1 for 5, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Monday 5/2/1971: Roberto Clemente collects 3000th hit against Houston
HOUSTON - Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Roberto Clemente already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 3000th career hit. With no outs in the 3rd inning, Roberto drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 3000 hits, Roberto collected 496 homeruns and 1844 RBI in 16 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Monday 5/2/1971: Herb Score fires 2-hitter against Boston
MILWAUKEE - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Milwaukee's Herb Score did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Boston. Score (2-3) fanned 7 and walked 5, throwing 116 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' The hitting star for Milwaukee was shortstop Ron Hansen, he got 2 hits in 2 AB, homering once, with 2 RBI. Milwaukee scored 3 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 5/2/1971: Killebrew (MIN) and Gibson (STL) win P.O.W. award
It's the 6th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Minnesota's third baseman Harmon Killebrew. Harmon was on fire, hitting .481 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. Killebrew has walked 10 times this year and posts a .417 OBP. While batting .352, 32 for 91, he has driven in 30 runs. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! St. Louis' pitcher Bob Gibson had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Sunday 5/1/1971: Chicago (A)'s Watt earns Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Chicago (A)'s Eddie Watt. His ERA of just 1.40 helped him to a 6-0 record in April. He worked 51.1 innings, striking out 28 hitters while walking 13. Eddie fired two shutouts! Cincinnati's Bob J. Thorpe had a terrific April, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 0.00 in 26.2 innings of work in which he struck out 23 hitters. His record in April is 3-0. Bob J. also fired a shutout.
