Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is New York (A)'s Cecil Upshaw. His record of 5-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 41 innings of work he allowed just 27 hits while striking out 10, compiling an ERA of just 1.10. Cecil got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 2.06 helped him to a 8-2 record this year. He struck out 22 and walked 6 in 74.1 innings. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 6th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Norm Cash, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. He hit .363 with 24 RBI and slugged .659 in 91 at bats. This year Cash drove in 37 and scored 42 runs while batting .353 with 11 longballs. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 4th in RBI! San Francisco's leftfielder Bill D. White had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Bill D. was on fire, hitting .365 with 4 homeruns and 23 RBI. His season features a batting average of .353 (76 hits in 215 AB), 15 doubles, 2 triples and 7 homeruns. White collected 33 RBI and 39 runs as well. He's 2nd in the National League in batting!
Monday 5/30/1971: Los Angeles (N)'s Koufax wins Player of the Week award
It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Eddie Watt. Watt was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 12 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! It's the 12th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Sandy Koufax. Koufax was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 15 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Wednesday 5/25/1971: Phil Regan blanks Washington with a 1-hitter
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Phil Regan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Washington on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. Regan (6-1) struck out 4 and walked 1, throwing 62 of 94 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Chicago (A)'s first baseman Katsuo Osugi went 3 for 4, hitting a homerun, and driving in 5 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Regan. Chicago (A) scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
