CINCINNATI - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Luis Tiant is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Tiant (10-3) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 59 of 95 pitches for strikes. Roberto Clemente provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Tiant needed as he went 1 for 3, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. Los Angeles (N) scored 2 runs on 2 hits.

CINCINNATI - Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Roberto Clemente was in good mood after the game against Cincinnati, and he had every reason as he made baseball history while collecting his 500th career homerun. In the 9th inning he unloaded his 500th blast off Jack Fisher. In 16 years of big league action so far, Roberto has compiled a batting average of .309, along with 3044 hits and 1868 RBI. Roberto has managed to hit 30+ homeruns in a season 10 times, and he topped 40 homeruns 7 times. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Tony Perez, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 7 weeks. Cincinnati's rightfielder Jim Wynn will miss about 5 weeks after being hit by Ken Forsch in the 5th inning of the game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. After being taken to a local hospital, Wynn was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Cheekbone. Wynn has hit 5 homeruns this year while batting .289. He adds 13 doubles, along with 42 runs scored.

OAKLAND - Cleveland's left-hander Don Rowe is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 41st time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Del Bates singled with no outs in the 6th inning. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 4th in RBI! The National League's best player of the week was Los Angeles (N)'s Rob Gardner, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Rob went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, while fanning 14 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.

He now has 2 career shutouts in 46 games started. Bruce Miller spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 7th inning. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Roggenburk (3-3) struck out 4 and walked 3, throwing 61 of 103 pitches for strikes. Dick Dietz helped Roggenburk at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, blasting a homerun. San Francisco improved its record to 35-20, scoring 3 runs on 9 hits.

'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.'
