Tuesday 6/21/1971: Ken Boswell (PHI) will miss 5 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's second baseman Ken Boswell will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 4th inning of the game between Philadelphia and St. Louis. He fielded a ball off the bat of Lee May, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Boswell had suffered a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Boswell has hit 4 longballs this year while batting .259. He adds 13 doubles, along with 31 runs scored.
Tuesday 6/21/1971: Roger Nelson pitches his 1st shutout of the season
WASHINGTON - Roger Nelson had some fun again. Washington hitters did not. Detroit's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 81 games started. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Lew Krausse Jr. singled with two outs in the 6th inning. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Nelson (8-8) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 106 pitches. Frank Coggins helped Nelson at the plate, he went 2 for 4, homering once, scoring twice with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Monday 6/20/1971: Don Rowe NO-HITS Chicago (A)
CLEVELAND - Don Rowe had some fun again. REAL fun. Chicago (A) hitters did not. Cleveland's left-hander fired a no-hitter in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 42 career shutouts in 505 games started. Rowe (10-5) struck out 8 and walked 1, throwing 69 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Cam Carreon helped Rowe at the plate, he got 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. Cleveland scored 4 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 6/20/1971: Player of the Week honors go to Romano and Orsino
The American League's best player of the week was Milwaukee's John Romano, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. John pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .682 with 2 HR and 4 RBI while slugging 1.091. John Orsino from Los Angeles (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. John went 9 for 23 (.391), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 8 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .382, John hit .298 and slugged .539. He has collected 67 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Sunday 6/19/1971: Dave Goltz out for 5-6 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Dave Goltz suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Montreal he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .270 against Dave this season. While posting an ERA of 7.22 he went 2-11 in 14 starts, fanning 60 and walking 56 hitters.
