Monday 7/11/1971: Alan Foster out for 6-7 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's right-hander Alan Foster suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 6-7 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against San Francisco he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Tricep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Foster compiled an ERA of 5.63, going 3-10 in 19 starts. He fanned 62 while giving up 128 hits in 115 innings.
Saturday 7/9/1971: Jackie Brandt hits for the cycle against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Kansas City's leftfielder Jackie Brandt accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Minnesota, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .241! His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Milt Pappas in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right field. A single in the 4th off Milt Pappas accounted for his 2nd hit. Hit number 3 followed in the 8th inning, a two-run triple. A pitch from Tom House in the 9th inning left his bat for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Jackie did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .242 this season, with 3 HR and 23 RBI. He becomes the 30th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Reggie Smith was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/31/1970.
