Saturday 7/30/1971: Atlanta's Flanigan severely injured
ATLANTA - Atlanta's pitcher Tom Flanigan was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 2nd inning of the game between Atlanta and San Francisco. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Flanigan will miss about 4-5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Flanigan was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Hand. In 22 starts this year Tom struck out 126 batters in 138 innings of work. His ERA is 2.87, his record 13-5. He's 6th in the National League in wins!
Monday 7/25/1971: Yastrzemski (BOS) and Clemente (LAN) win P.O.W. award
Carl Yastrzemski from Boston wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Carl pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .458 with 2 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.042. Roberto Clemente from Los Angeles (N) wins his 21st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 23 at bats he hit .565 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.
Saturday 7/23/1971: Jim Bibby blanks Houston with a 1-hitter
HOUSTON - Jim Bibby took the mound and never left. And Houston hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 56 games started. Bibby (11-10) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 61 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Philadelphia's leftfielder Bob Aspromonte stroked 3 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Bibby. Philadelphia improved its record to 37-59, scoring 6 runs on 12 hits.
