Monday 8/15/1971: Detroit's Rose Sr. wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Pete Rose Sr., who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. Pete was on fire, hitting .476 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. Houston's pitcher Jim Merritt had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Jim went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.04, while fanning 5 in 17.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Monday 8/8/1971: Oliva and Oliver win Player of the Week award
It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's rightfielder Tony Oliva. In 22 at bats he hit .545 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. Tony is hitting .252 this year, with 96 hits in 381 at bats. He has driven in 67 runs, slugging .533. Gene Oliver from New York (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Gene pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .591 with 4 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.409. Gene has gone 111 for 433 (.256) this season, hitting 18 bombs and driving in 68 runs. He has scored 50 runs on his own. He's 8th in the National League in RBIs and 6th in homeruns!
Sunday 8/7/1971: Don Rowe fires 1-hitter against Kansas City
CLEVELAND - Great days are rare. But not for Cleveland's left-hander Don Rowe. Kansas City found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 44th time he has done it in his career. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Rowe (14-8) struck out 8 and walked 1, throwing 73 of 123 pitches for strikes. Dick Brown provided Cleveland with the offense Rowe needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. Cleveland improved its record to 63-47, scoring 1 run on 4 hits.
