Tuesday 9/6/1971: Adolfo Phillips clubs five hits in a game
PHILADELPHIA - Adolfo Phillips saw the ball really well, leading Chicago (N) to a 6-5 win over Philadelphia. His five hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Adolfo seemed happy as well after the game. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Fred Klages in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 408 feet from home plate. In the 13th inning he unloaded a triple off Tom Parsons. He had singles in the 5th Adolfo did drive in one while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .250 this season, with 20 HR and 73 RBI.
Tuesday 9/6/1971: Baltimore's Otis severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's centerfielder Amos Otis suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Detroit's Jack Jenkins. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Otis will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. Broken Hand was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Amos is hitting .282 this year, with 133 hits in 471 at bats. He has driven in 43 runs, slugging .423.
Monday 9/5/1971: Boston's Garvey wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Steve Garvey, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Steve went 14 for 22 (.636), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 5 RBI. Pittsburgh's pitcher Catfish Hunter had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Catfish went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 14 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .247 against Catfish this season. While posting an ERA of 3.94 he went 7-19 in 31 starts, fanning 182 and walking 126 hitters. Catfish has pitched 2 shutouts and 12 complete games.
