Thursday 9/15/1971: Gary Nolan pitches 2-hit shutout against Montreal
MONTREAL - Cincinnati's right-hander Gary Nolan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Nolan (16-9) fanned 4 and walked 4, throwing 116 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Cincinnati's shortstop Hal Lanier collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nolan. Cincinnati improved its record to 91-54, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Wednesday 9/14/1971: Ken Holtzman out for 5-6 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (N)'s southpaw Ken Holtzman will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Diego where he left the field in the 3rd inning. Chicago (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Holtzman had suffered a Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Ken has a record of 9-7 this season, with an ERA of 2.90. In 205 Innings he was able to strike out 159 batters. Ken has pitched 2 shutouts and 10 complete games.
Monday 9/12/1971: McLain and Phillips win Player of the Week award
Denny McLain of Oakland wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.59 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Adolfo Phillips this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Adolfo was on fire, hitting .586 with 4 HR and 7 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games.
Sunday 9/11/1971: Dick Nold pitches 2-hit shutout against San Diego
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's offense is struggling, and Pittsburgh's Dick Nold didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 2nd shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Nold (6-20) struck out 6 and walked 3, throwing 66 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Richie Scheinblum provided Pittsburgh with the offense Nold needed as he went 2 for 4. Pittsburgh scored 1 run on 9 hits.
Friday 9/9/1971: Joey Jay pitches 5-hit shutout against Washington
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Joey Jay is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Washington found out the hard way, getting just 5 hits. Jay 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 24th shutouts in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Jay (17-9) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 63 of 95 pitches for strikes. Angel Bravo provided Boston with the offense Jay needed as he collected 0 hit in 2 trips to the plate. The final score of the game was 1-0.
