Saturday 10/1/1971: Los Angeles (N)'s Koufax named Pitcher of the Month
Larry Bearnarth couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 1.41 in 57.1 innings of work in which he struck out 24 hitters. His record in September is 7-0. Larry pitched a shutout as well. In 37 starts this year Larry struck out 144 batters in 299.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.71, his record 29-7. Larry has pitched 6 shutouts and 20 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Sandy Koufax couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the National League thought so as well, naming the southpaw Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 73 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 73 innings. His ERA in September was 0.77. Sandy got two complete game shutouts as well! The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Minnesota's Davey Johnson this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Johnson helped his team with an average of .353 and 27 RBI in 102 at bats. He has hit 22 homeruns while batting .254 this season. His 116 hits and 46 walks add up to a .321 on-base percentage. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Roberto Clemente this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Roberto went 38 for 108 (.352), while hitting 7 HR and collecting 24 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .414, Roberto hit .360 and slugged .581. He has collected 130 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Thursday 9/29/1971: Jim Merritt dominates Atlanta, throws NO-HITTER
HOUSTON - Houston's southpaw Jim Merritt made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Atlanta. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Chuck Cottier spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 2 away in the 9th inning. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' Merritt (15-21) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 59 of 99 pitches for strikes. Bob Watson helped Merritt at the plate, he got 1 hit in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. Houston improved its record to 74-85, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
Thursday 9/29/1971: Detroit's Norm Cash gets the cycle
CLEVELAND - Detroit's first baseman Norm Cash once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Thursday. A RBI double off Jim McAndrew in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 3rd off Jim McAndrew accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, off Jim McAndrew in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A pitch from Jack Baldschun in the 8th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Norm scored one run, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He now has a total of 151 hits this season, accounting for a .293 batting average. He becomes the 31st player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 7/9/1971, Jackie Brandt was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Tuesday 9/27/1971: San Francisco's Clete Boyer laces 2000th career hit
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's players had every reason to congratulate Clete Boyer, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With no outs in the 3rd inning, Clete drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1967 where he hit .258 with 27 homeruns and 73 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
Monday 9/26/1971: Player of the Week honors go to Johnson and Sorrell
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Davey Johnson, Minnesota's starting first baseman. Johnson helped his team with an average of .600 and 14 RBI in 20 at bats. Johnson has walked 45 times this year and posts a .322 OBP. While batting .253, 111 for 438, he has driven in 69 runs. Billy Sorrell wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .526 and hit .526, while driving in 6 runs. His season features a batting average of .283 (148 hits in 523 AB), 14 doubles, 6 triples and 11 bombs. Sorrell collected 51 RBI and 42 runs as well.

OAKLAND - Don Schwall had his best stuff going, and Oakland hitters were chanceless. Milwaukee's right-hander fired a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Schwall (6-8) fanned 2 and walked 2, throwing 99 pitches. Ron Hansen provided Milwaukee with the offense Schwall needed as he went 3 for 5, hitting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring twice with 3 RBI. Milwaukee improved its record to 60-93, scoring 10 runs on 8 hits.
