Wednesday 6/1/1972: California's Hall earns Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to California's pitcher Tom Hall. He went 5-1 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.52. He struck out 35 in 52 innings. Tom fired two shutouts! In 13 starts this year Tom struck out 74 batters in 105 innings of work. His ERA is 0.94, his record 11-2. He has 7 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Jack Billingham pitched like a legend in May, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 3-1 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 50.1 innings of work he allowed just 27 hits while striking out 36, compiling an ERA of just 0.89. His ERA of 2.00 helped him to a 6-2 record this year. The American League's best player of the month was Oakland's Joe Rudi, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .311 and hit .290, while driving in 19 runs. Joe has gone 61 for 192 (.318) this season, hitting 10 homeruns and driving in 34 runs. He has scored 22 runs on his own. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 8th in RBI! Monday 5/30/1972: Milwaukee's Baylor out for 6 weeks
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's players were scared when they had to watch Don Baylor suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against New York (A). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Baylor will probaby miss 6 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Dislocated Shoulder which will require surgery. His season numbers are: .276 AVG, 45 hits, 5 doubles, 4 triples and 2 taters, along with 12 RBI and 22 runs scored.
Monday 5/30/1972: Krausse Jr. and Kaiser win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Lew Krausse Jr., one of Texas' best starting pitchers. Lew went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 13 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Don Kaiser, one of New York (N)'s best starting pitchers. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.15, while fanning 21 in 15.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Don has a record of 8-2 this season, with an ERA of 1.49. Friday 5/27/1972: Pete Rose Sr. ropes 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (A) - Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 6th off Mel Stottlemyre for number 2000. Along with his 2000 hits, Pete collected 184 homeruns and 812 RBI in 9 seasons. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
Monday 5/23/1972: New York (A)'s Allen wins Player of the Week award
New York (A)'s centerfielder Dick Allen had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Dick was on fire, hitting .571 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Bernie Carbo. Bernie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 4 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.190. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Friday 5/20/1972: Tom Hall fires NO-NO against Kansas City
CALIFORNIA - Tom Hall had some fun again. REAL fun. Kansas City hitters did not. California's southpaw fired a no-hitter in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 13 career shutouts in 121 games started. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Hall (10-1) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 6, throwing 110 pitches. The hitting star for California was catcher Vic Correll, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, and collecting 2 RBI. California scored 7 runs on 14 hits.
Thursday 5/19/1972: Mudcat Grant dominates Philadelphia, gives up just 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Great days are rare. But not for Chicago (N)'s right-hander Mudcat Grant. Philadelphia found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 65th time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Grant (5-3) struck out 8 and walked 4, throwing 71 of 125 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (N) was second baseman Dave Nelson, he finished with 1 hit in 2 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (N) improved its record to 23-18, scoring 2 runs on 4 hits.

CINCINNATI - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Rob Gardner is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.'
