Monday 6/6/1972: Player of the Week honors go to Watt and Drysdale
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Chicago (A)'s Eddie Watt this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Watt was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 11 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.36 helped him to a 9-2 record this year. He struck out 77 and walked 22 in 106 innings. Eddie has pitched 3 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Don Drysdale this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Drysdale was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 21 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 6/4/1972: Kansas City has no chance in a 2-hitter by Al Neiger
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's left-hander Al Neiger is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Neiger (3-0) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 98 pitches. Bob Chance provided Milwaukee with the offense Neiger needed as he collected 5 hits in 5 trips to the plate, doubling once, scoring twice with 6 RBI. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Thursday 6/2/1972: Mike Corkins shuts out Philadelphia on 2 hits
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Mike Corkins will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Philadelphia on Thursday. Corkins (4-2) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 66 of 93 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Lee May helped Corkins at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 5 RBI. St. Louis improved its record to 30-23, scoring 9 runs on 11 hits.
Thursday 6/2/1972: Mickey Lolich NO-HITS New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Mickey Lolich had some fun again. REAL fun. New York (A) hitters did not. California's southpaw fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 264 games started. Lolich (7-3) was really unbelievable, striking out 16 and walking 1, throwing 78 of 126 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' California's leftfielder Jose Cardenal got 2 hits in 3 AB, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Lolich. California scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
