Thursday 6/16/1972: Fritz Peterson quiets Cleveland bats with shutout
OAKLAND - Fritz Peterson took the mound and never left. And Cleveland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Oakland's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 13 career shutouts in 217 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Peterson (6-7) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 78 of 121 pitches for strikes. Oakland's rightfielder Ken Henderson finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Peterson. Oakland improved its record to 27-39, scoring 4 runs on 5 hits.
Wednesday 6/15/1972: Bill Melton (SFG) will miss 6 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's players were scared when they had to watch Bill Melton suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Pittsburgh. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Melton will probaby miss 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Hand. Surgery will be performed next week. His season numbers are: .280 AVG, 66 hits, 13 doubles, 3 triples and 14 homeruns, along with 53 RBI and 45 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Wednesday 6/15/1972: Don Buddin has 2000th career hits
BOSTON - Boston's players had every reason to congratulate Don Buddin, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 1st inning, Don drilled a two run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1969 where he hit .306 with 22 homeruns and 80 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
Monday 6/13/1972: Rowe and Jenkins win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Don Rowe, one of Cleveland's best starting pitchers. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59, while fanning 12 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Fergie Jenkins this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Jenkins was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00. Along the way he struck out 19 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. In 13 starts this year Fergie struck out 104 batters in 107.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.43, his record 7-4. He has 8 complete games and one shutout.
Sunday 6/12/1972: Jim Gentile collects 2000th hit against Detroit
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's players had every reason to congratulate Jim Gentile, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 1960 where he hit .346 with 51 homeruns and 151 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' He hit a single in the 6th off Larry Bearnarth for number 2000.
Saturday 6/11/1972: California's Hall out for 4-5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California is without its lefty Tom Hall for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Sam Bowens in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. California wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Hall had suffered a Torn Tricep Muscle. In 16 starts this year Tom struck out 87 batters in 126.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.42, his record 12-3. He has 8 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Friday 6/10/1972: Dick Hughes (NYM) will miss 4 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - When it rains, it pours. New York (N)'s right-hander Dick Hughes will not pitch for at least 4 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 8th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Hughes was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Dick has a record of 5-4 this season, with an ERA of 2.19. In 106.2 Innings he was able to strike out 45 batters. He has 5 complete games and one shutout.

NEW YORK (N) - Tom Seaver had some fun again. Chicago (N) hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 198 games started. Seaver (7-4) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 70 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Tony Conigliaro helped Seaver at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring three runs and driving in 4 runs. New York (N) scored 8 runs on 12 hits.
