Steve Hargan of New York (A) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Hargan was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 12 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! The National League's best player of the week was St. Louis' Don Drysdale, who wins the award for the 12th time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! Don has a record of 10-5 this season, with an ERA of 1.96. In 142.2 Innings he was able to strike out 166 batters. He has 9 complete games and 3 shutouts.
Saturday 7/2/1972: Don Drysdale shuts out New York (N) on 2 hits
NEW YORK (N) - Don Drysdale had some fun again. New York (N) hitters did not. St. Louis' right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 81 career shutouts in 597 games started. Drysdale (10-5) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 139 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' St. Louis' leftfielder Cleon Jones finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, hitting a double, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Drysdale. St. Louis improved its record to 49-32, scoring 7 runs on 10 hits.
Friday 7/1/1972: Minnesota's Dobson named Pitcher of the Month
Minnesota's Andy Messersmith had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 7-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 57 innings of work he allowed just 45 hits while striking out 26, compiling an ERA of just 2.68. This season Messersmith compiled an ERA of 3.01, going 13-4 in 20 starts. He fanned 75 while giving up 131 hits in 164.2 innings. He has 8 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the American League in wins! Minnesota's Pat Dobson had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 0.63 in 43 innings of work in which he struck out 33 hitters. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to John Romano, Baltimore's starting catcher. John was on fire, hitting .333 with 7 homeruns and 23 RBI. His season numbers are: .272 AVG, 77 hits, 10 doubles, 6 triples and 10 taters, along with 41 RBI and 54 runs scored. New York (N)'s third baseman Floyd Robinson had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Floyd was on fire, hitting .385 with 5 homeruns and 17 RBI. Floyd is hitting .342 this year, with 104 hits in 304 at bats. He has driven in 46 runs, slugging .523. He's 1st in the National League in batting!

The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Joey Jay, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.80 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Sandy Koufax, one of Los Angeles (N)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 6/25/1972: Joey Jay turns in great performance against Texas
TEXAS - Great days are rare. But not for Boston's right-hander Joey Jay. Texas found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 28th time he has done it in his career. Jay (10-6) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 55 of 90 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' The hitting star for Boston was rightfielder Carl Yastrzemski, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, homering twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. Boston scored 11 runs on 13 hits.
Friday 6/24/1972: Detroit's Hartenstein severely injured
DETROIT - Detroit is without its right-hander Chuck Hartenstein for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bob Saverine in a game against Minnesota. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Hartenstein had suffered a Strained Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 2.25 helped him to a 1-0 record this year. He struck out 14 and walked 2 in 24 innings.
