Wednesday 7/13/1972: Detroit's Harper severely injured
DETROIT - Detroit's leftfielder Tommy Harper hurt himself in the 8th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Tommy Harper will miss at least 4 weeks. Fractured Ulna was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .341, Tommy hit .249 and slugged .402. He has collected 42 runs batted in this year.
Saturday 7/9/1972: Jim Bibby shuts out Pittsburgh on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Jim Bibby is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Bibby (8-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 99 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' The hitting star for Philadelphia was shortstop Dave Cash, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Friday 7/8/1972: Montreal has no chance in a 1-hitter by Gaylord Perry
MONTREAL - San Francisco's right-hander Gaylord Perry is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Montreal found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Perry 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 26th shutouts in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Perry (15-5) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 107 pitches. Davey Lopes helped Perry at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring three runs and collecting 3 RBI. San Francisco improved its record to 50-32, scoring 17 runs on 12 hits.
