Friday 7/22/1972: Milwaukee's Ron Hansen laces six hits
OAKLAND - Ron Hansen hits 'em where they ain't. Oakland certainly agrees as Milwaukee's shortstop unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd , in the 3rd inning (two RBIs) , in the 6th inning , in the 8th inning and in the 9th (two RBIs). Ron did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 85 hits this season, accounting for a .245 batting average. Milwaukee improved its record to 45-51, scoring 14 runs on 23 hits.
Friday 7/22/1972: Al Neiger pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
OAKLAND - Great days are rare. But not for Milwaukee's lefty Al Neiger. Oakland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Dick McAuliffe doubled with one out in the 7th inning. Neiger (6-2) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 59 of 88 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Milwaukee's shortstop Ron Hansen finished 6 for 6, scoring twice and driving in 4 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Neiger. The final score of the game was 14-0.
Wednesday 7/20/1972: Bob Gibson blanks Pittsburgh with a 1-hitter
PITTSBURGH - St. Louis' right-hander Bob Gibson is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Gibson 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 73rd shutouts in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Richie Scheinblum singled with no outs in the 8th inning. Gibson (13-5) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 88 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Cleon Jones helped Gibson at the plate, he went 2 for 4, homering once, scoring twice. St. Louis scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Tuesday 7/19/1972: Rich Beck dominates Texas, gives up just 2 hits
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Rich Beck is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Beck (9-7) struck out 1 and walked 1, throwing 72 of 110 pitches for strikes. Jose Pagan helped Beck at the plate, he stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Monday 7/18/1972: Bert Blyleven pitches 1-hit shutout against Pittsburgh
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Bert Blyleven didn't look unexperienced at all. The 21 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against Pittsburgh, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Blyleven (6-6) fanned 7 and walked 3, throwing 116 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Bob Watson helped Blyleven at the plate, he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, with 2 RBI. Houston scored 4 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 7/18/1972: San Francisco's Sutton wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Milwaukee's Jim Northrup, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .520 and hit .455, while driving in 5 runs. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Don Sutton, one of San Francisco's best starting pitchers. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 18 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 23 starts this year Don struck out 189 batters in 192.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.01, his record 13-6. Don has pitched 3 shutouts and 13 complete games. He's 10th in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Friday 7/15/1972: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Bill Singer
SAN DIEGO - Bill Singer had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 111 games started. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Singer (9-8) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 104 pitches. The hitting star for Chicago (N) was first baseman Cecil Cooper, he went 2 for 3, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. Chicago (N) scored 10 runs on 16 hits.
