Saturday 8/6/1972: Bob Gibson earns 300th career win
SAN FRANCISCO - St. Louis' right-hander Bob Gibson already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 300th career win. Gibson went 9 innings. He allowed 0 earned runs while striking out 10 and walking 0. His career features a 2.37 ERA, along with 3833 K's in 4038 innings. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' He set a career high with 32 wins in 1963. Gibson won 20 or more games a season 8 times. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it.
Saturday 8/6/1972: Jim Lonborg turns in great performance against Minnesota
BOSTON - Jim Lonborg had some fun again. Minnesota hitters did not. Boston's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts in 229 games started. Lonborg (19-8) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 64 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' The hitting star for Boston was first baseman Steve Garvey, he got 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a double, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Tuesday 8/2/1972: Don Sutton fires 2-hitter against San Diego
SAN DIEGO - San Francisco's right-hander Don Sutton is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 19th time he has done it in his career. Sutton (16-7) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 120 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Bud Harrelson provided San Francisco with the offense Sutton needed as he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, and collecting 3 RBI. San Francisco scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 8/2/1972: Minnesota's Pappas severely injured
MINNESOTA - When it rains, it pours. Minnesota's ace Milt Pappas will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .183 against Milt this season. While posting an ERA of 2.92 he went 10-7 in 27 starts, fanning 151 and walking 58 hitters.
Tuesday 8/2/1972: Mike Solomko stars with 2000th career hit
OAKLAND - Boston's leftfielder Mike Solomko was in good mood after the game against Oakland, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1962 where he hit .288 with 43 homeruns and 117 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' He hit a single in the 8th off Terry Fox for number 2000.
Monday 8/1/1972: Player of the Week honors go to Stottlemyre and Bench
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Mel Stottlemyre this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Mel went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53, while fanning 5 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Stottlemyre compiled an ERA of 2.72, going 10-7 in 21 starts. He fanned 91 while giving up 150 hits in 172 innings. He has 9 complete games and one shutout. Johnny Bench from Cincinnati wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .455 with 7 RBI and slugged .909 in 22 at bats.

The best month of July in the American League certainly had New York (A)'s lefty Jim Kaat, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 4-0 in 4 was among the leagues best this month. In 33 innings of work he allowed just 20 hits while striking out 10, compiling an ERA of just 0.82. Jim also fired a shutout. In 20 starts this year Jim struck out 62 batters in 161.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.06, his record 18-0. He has 6 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Cincinnati's Jack Billingham had a terrific July, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He started 6 games in July, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.00 in 38.2 innings. Jack fanned 35 hitters. Jack has a record of 14-3 this season, with an ERA of 1.31. In 172 Innings he was able to strike out 148 batters. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 5th in wins!

The American League's best player of the month was Baltimore's Brooks Robinson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Robinson helped his team with an average of .330 and 25 RBI in 94 at bats. Robinson has walked 21 times this year and posts a .300 OBP. While batting .255, 95 for 373, he has driven in 53 runs. Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Roberto Clemente had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .447 and hit .411, while driving in 21 runs. Clemente has hit for a .355 average this season. He has 47 extra base hits along with 217 total bases, resulting in a .547 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 5th in RBI!
Sunday 7/31/1972: Joe Hoerner (ATL) will miss 5 weeks
ATLANTA - When it rains, it pours. Atlanta's left-hander Joe Hoerner will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 8th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Hoerner was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. Joe has a record of 1-2 this season, with an ERA of 3.76. In 26.1 Innings he was able to strike out 23 batters.
