Monday 8/15/1972: Peterson and Smith win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Oakland's Fritz Peterson, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Cincinnati's first baseman Reggie Smith. Reggie was on fire, hitting .563 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. Smith has hit for a .277 average this season. He has 31 extra base hits along with 116 total bases, resulting in a .545 slugging percentage.
Saturday 8/13/1972: Sandy Koufax earns 300th career win
PITTSBURGH - Los Angeles (N)'s players had every reason to congratulate Sandy Koufax, who reached a milestone today, winning his 300th game! Koufax went 9 innings. He allowed 0 earned runs while striking out 10 and walking 1. He has enmassed 4429 K's in 3992 career innings so far, and posts a 2.35 lifetime ERA. He has won 20 games 11 times in his career, setting a career high with 28 wins in 1970. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
Monday 8/8/1972: McGlothlin (CAL) and Nagashima (HOU) win P.O.W. award
California's pitcher Jim McGlothlin had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. McGlothlin was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .242 against Jim this season. While posting an ERA of 4.07 he went 7-4 in 12 starts, fanning 60 and walking 39 hitters. Jim has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. Shigeo Nagashima wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .531 and hit .483, while driving in 11 runs.
