Monday 8/22/1972: Lonborg and Boros win Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's pitcher Jim Lonborg. Jim went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 13 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! Steve Boros from New York (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Steve was on fire, hitting .462 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .362, Steve hit .288 and slugged .425. He has collected 65 runs batted in this year.
Sunday 8/21/1972: Houston's Patek out for 5-6 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's Freddie Patek suffered a serious injury Sunday in a game against Cincinnati. Patek fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. Patek was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Knee. This year Patek drove in 28 and scored 45 runs while batting .246 with 2 taters.
Sunday 8/21/1972: Don Rowe pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
DETROIT - Detroit's left-hander Don Rowe is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 47th time he has done it in his career. Rowe (15-12) fanned 2 and walked 1, throwing 108 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. got 4 hits in 5 AB, homering twice, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rowe. The final score of the game was 8-0.
Friday 8/19/1972: Jack Fisher quiets Houston bats with shutout
CINCINNATI - Jack Fisher had some fun again. Houston hitters did not. Cincinnati's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 266 games started. Fisher (14-7) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 67 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Cincinnati's catcher Johnny Bench went 3 for 5, homering once, stroking a double, scoring two runs with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Fisher. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Wednesday 8/17/1972: Andy Messersmith fires 1-hitter against Kansas City
KANSAS CITY - Andy Messersmith took the mound and never left. And Kansas City hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 158 games started. Messersmith (19-6) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 74 of 122 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Minnesota's centerfielder Merv Rettenmund got 2 hits in 5 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Messersmith. Minnesota scored 6 runs on 13 hits.
Tuesday 8/16/1972: Bob J. Thorpe NO-HITS Atlanta
ATLANTA - Age doesn't matter. At least Cincinnati's right-hander Bob J. Thorpe shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a no-hitter against Atlanta, showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. Chuck Cottier spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 9th inning. Thorpe (14-7) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Jim Fregosi helped Thorpe at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double, with 4 RBI. Cincinnati improved its record to 72-46, scoring 12 runs on 14 hits.
Monday 8/15/1972: Chicago (A)'s Regan severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Phil Regan suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Baltimore he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Regan was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Spasms Back. His ERA of 3.24 helped him to a 9-10 record this year. He struck out 104 and walked 37 in 180.2 innings.

BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's lefty Bill Short will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 1st inning. Short was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Bicep Muscle. Opposing players hit .292 against Bill this season. While posting an ERA of 3.87 he went 8-9 in 24 starts, fanning 114 and walking 31 hitters.

Lonborg (21-8) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. Don Buddin provided Boston with the offense Lonborg needed as he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. Boston scored 3 runs on 8 hits.
