Thursday 9/1/1972: Cincinnati's Fisher named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Oakland's pitcher Fritz Peterson. His ERA of just 1.07 helped him to a 6-0 record in August. He worked 50.1 innings, striking out 23 hitters while walking 4. Fritz also fired a shutout. In 28 starts this year Fritz struck out 142 batters in 236.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.21, his record 15-10. He has 18 complete games and 5 shutouts. Jack Fisher couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 1.33 helped him to a 5-2 record in August. He worked 67.2 innings, striking out 60 hitters while walking 16. Jack fired two shutouts! This season Fisher compiled an ERA of 2.06, going 16-8 in 27 starts. He fanned 197 while giving up 149 hits in 218 innings. Jack has pitched 5 shutouts and 12 complete games.

It's the 7th time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Detroit's second baseman Jerry Kindall. In 104 at bats he hit .404 with 7 HR and 24 RBI. Jerry has gone 157 for 489 (.321) this season, hitting 19 longballs and driving in 79 runs. He has scored 68 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in batting and 6th in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Frank Robinson, San Francisco's starting rightfielder. Robinson helped his team with an average of .430 and 29 RBI in 100 at bats. He has hit 23 longballs while batting .307 this season. His 146 hits and 64 walks add up to a .409 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Wednesday 8/31/1972: New York (N)'s Foy out for full season
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s second baseman Joe Foy will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between New York (N) and Houston. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Foy collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Foy was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Calf Muscle. Joe is hitting .259 this year, with 125 hits in 482 at bats. He has driven in 50 runs, slugging .394.
Monday 8/29/1972: Shigeo Nagashima (HOU) will miss full season
HOUSTON - Houston's third baseman Shigeo Nagashima will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Houston and New York (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Nagashima collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Saturday 8/27/1972: Catfish Hunter pitches 2-hit shutout against San Diego
SAN DIEGO - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Pittsburgh's Catfish Hunter did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against San Diego. Hunter (6-16) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 130 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' The hitting star for Pittsburgh was second baseman Tex Nelson, he went 3 for 4, hitting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. Pittsburgh scored 2 runs on 6 hits.
Friday 8/26/1972: Oakland's Sadaharu Oh gets the cycle
KANSAS CITY - Sadaharu Oh is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a RBI double. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Dennis Ribant in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in center field. A pitch from Ron Willis in the 4th inning left his bat for a triple. A single in the 6th off Ron Willis accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Sadaharu scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .248 this season, with 20 HR and 70 RBI. He's now the 32nd player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 9/29/1971, Norm Cash was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Thursday 8/25/1972: Bob J. Thorpe blanks San Diego with a 1-hitter
CINCINNATI - Bob J. Thorpe took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. Cincinnati's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts in 436 games started. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Thorpe (15-7) struck out 8 and walked 3, throwing 58 of 102 pitches for strikes. Cincinnati's first baseman Willie Stargell went 2 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Thorpe. The final score of the game was 4-0.

MINNESOTA - When it rains, it pours. Minnesota's southpaw Ramon Hernandez will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 9th inning. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .151 against Ramon this season. While posting an ERA of 0.00 he went 1-0 in 0 starts, fanning 13 and walking 18 hitters.
